Trudog compares the Maverick and the Zombi Aluminium yoyo's. I think you'll find it helpful.

Yo-yo madness has hit our elementary school. Although I was reluctant to spend so much on a yo-yo (seriously!?!), I ordered one for each of my two sons. The hours of fun (and sleeping, bow-ties, mouse, binding and other tricks) we have had merit the cost. They withstand a lot of abuse and spin like crazy. Our house highly recommends the Yomega Maverick!

i love this yoyo. it is all metal so it breaks strings alot because of its weight, so get more strings. i got a black one, in case the pictures confuse some of you. sleeps really good, the bearing started to click after a month so i bought more bearings. very easy for string tricks. metal isnt really for begginers but i was fine with it. seems small for offstring tricks but ive never tried it.
great yoyo.

I had previously been given this yo-yo from a relative and I fell in love with it! I have since bought a Dv888 and although I will not argue that the 888 is a better yoyo I will say I find myself using the Maverick nearly twice as much. I have personally purchased this yo-yo for my friend who wants to get into yo-yoing and is working on a free medical aid ship off the coast of Africa for 10 months. These are the reasons for my choice:
Pro's: 1. The Maverick is a great starter yo-yo, it will return to you're hand for the first 200ish ours of play with no problems. This means it won't frustrate the beginner as many non-responsive yo-yo's will do. 2. The Maverick is fully capable of the more advanced non-responsive string tricks after the 200 hour mark (this is because the rubber bumpers wear away making it need a bind return). 3. The Maverick is cheap compared to all other metal yo-yo's, 20$ is nothing in the world of unresponsive yo-yo's. 4. The Maverick is durable! I use the Maverick more than my Dv888 for one reason: Durability. The Maverick can take a hit, bounce off concrete, cement, hit railings, and keep going. (Mine currently has metal showing on the outside of both halves, still play's great.) I do believe the dv888 would do the same but I refuse to beat up my 45$ yoyo. 5. Finally, the Maverick grows with you! When the yoyo is fresh out of the box it will respond to a small jerk of the finger, great for frustrated beginners. As you continue to play the bumpers will wear out making the yoyo less responsive to every tug. After awhile it will not come up all together, this is perfect for the intermediate/ advanced player because an entire world of string tricks are available only to yo-yo'rs that have fully unresponsive yoyo's. Con's: 1. The Maverick as an awkward bearing size, this means that replacement bearings, although generally unnecessary, are a pain to purchase. (I have roughly ~1500hrs on my bearing, no problems) 2. The bearing does not stay on one half of the yo-yo when disassembled, this means if you get a knot in you're string and you open you're yo-yo you may lose the bearing. (I once had to climb under a muddy deck to retrieve mine) 3. You will not have the stability that other much more expensive yo-yo's will have nor will you have the sleep time. This is sometimes a problem when learning a long trick because it leaves little room for error. That being said sleep time is generally determined by user skill. In the beginning I could get 30seconds from my Maverick, now I'm pushing 2 min. It will come in time. 4. Finally the Maverick, after allot of play, has a tendency to come apart during play. This is normally not a problem because the Maverick makes a very distinct sound before separation. On average my yoyo tries to separate every 8ish hours of play. 5. It is a metal yo-yo and thus it is hard. Obviously. It is also heavier than the general plastic yoyo, this can sometimes lead to hurt hands. This will only be a problem for the first week. Hands will toughen up and the way you catch the yoyo will become more refined. Overall the Maverick is THE BEST choice for any kid, teen or adult looking for an awesome yoyo on a budget. It's versatile, strong, basically bullet proof, and will grow with the yo-yo'ers skill.

I bought this yoyo and i like it alot. It sleeps for awile and handles a variety of tricks very well. It can be a little unresponsive at times but thats because i've never lubed it. I use it all the time and i have never had anything break on it or anything problems. It's great for a beginner or an advanced user. The video that comes with it is great it cover tricks from beginner to advanced. It shipped to my house in less days than it estimated which was cool. I hope this helps you out. I would reccomend this yoyo to anyone.

Yo-yos are such personal things. I have found over the years what one individual feels about a particular brand or model can quite well be to polar opposite of another. Yo-yos also behave differently; even those of the same brand and model. I have used three of these Mavericks and each and every one of them behaved just slightly different and each had a different "feel."
For the money, I like this yo-yo. For the quality and versatility you are getting you are actually spending very little. No, it is not as good as some of the one, two and three hundred dollar or more yo-yos but those are made for specific purposes and for specific skill levels. Most of us...myself included, will never have an actual need for something like those; although I must admit that they would be nice to have. This yo-yo is simply not for everyone and the Omega Company plainly says that in their advertisements. It is of course made of metal and has a very high tech bearing. This is a very small yo-yo compared to most but it weighs much more than larger models. It is extremely fast, it is small and it is hard. If you throw a very hard sleeper and if you mess up, this thing can cause quite an impact on your hand if you are not ready for it; it can and does cause some soreness and bruising until you get use to the thing. That being said.... I have had great luck with the Maverick. Like any yo-yo that is used a lot it will require a lot of string changes. I can get about two hours out of one string. If you buy this thing be sure you purchase plenty of extra strings while you are at it as you will need them. Of course you can say that about any nice yo-yo that is used a lot...the more the yo-yo weighs the more strings you will go through. The sleep time on this model is great. Due to the wing or butterfly shape, it is great for string tricks. The gap is a bit wider than on some yo-yos which helps a lot, especially for some one like me...old and not very good. The smallness takes a bit of getting use to especially if you have been using a larger model. I have several so the adjustment was not difficult for me as the sizes of mine go from ultra small to quite large. I have found these yo-yos to be quite well made. Like any yo-yo they will break if you continually bash them into the ground on a hard surface. This is often caused by improper string length. Seldom does the length of the string right out of the box fit the individual thrower...you have to cut and adjust. I stand just less than six feet and use a much longer string than a four foot kid would use. Now I like this model as it suits my need well. It is versatile enough to give me plenty of learning space and I like the smooth and fast action along with the long sleep time. But, as I said, this one is not for everyone. I personally would hesitate to give it to a very young beginner and of course different people have different tastes. Don Blankenship The Ozarks

I ordered this yoyo and I can't put it down. It is very durable and the string holds up for a long time. It sleeps for about 45 seconds. The only down sides are that when it hits tile or wood it creates a loud ringing sound. also if you get the black edition the black paint can get scraped off. I really encourage you to buy this yoyo.

it doesn't come with "5 bonus" strings. It comes with one already attached and one extra. My son broke the first string within a couple of hours. You will need to buy more strings.

When I was in junior high and high school I learned used the Duncan standard and butterfly yo-yos. I learned how to do walk the dog, around the world, and even rock the baby in the cradle. Rock the baby was a hard trick because it was very difficult to get the yo-yos to sleep long enough.I'm in my thirties now and a few months ago I decided I wanted to buy a "good" yo-yo. I thought I would take a risk and buy an "advanced" yo-yo with ball bearings around the axle. I must say, although there may not be a "best" yo-yo, if you are only going to buy one, the Maverick won't disappoint. Construction: The Maverick is made out of metal and has a nice weight to it. It wasn't quite as large around as I thought it would be, but I don't see that as a problem. I think it has a slightly smaller diameter than other yo-yos I've used. The butterfly shape for this yo-yo is very nice. I've learned how to get the yo-yo to land on the string after looping over my finger and the butterfly shape helps me out on that. It has a good solid feel in your hand. It does not feel cheap at all to me. Sleep Time: I normally get it to sleep for about 20 to 30 seconds. This is much better than the 10 seconds I'm used to getting. I can do Rock The Baby several rocks before needing to be finished. I've also been able learn several other tricks that require more sleep time. Also, when the yo-yo is spinning it feels very smooth. Return System: I've read some reviews on return systems making them sound like there were special ways to get the yo-yo to return. It turns out that with the Maverick, I do exactly what I did with Duncan yo-yos to get them to return. It was a snap. Extras: The package came with extra strings and a DVD with trick demos. The DVD format for showing the tricks isn't the best for learning, but at least it's a comprehensive place to see the tricks. I found it was easier to look up tricks on Youtube.com because it's faster to track. Over All: I was worried when I ordered this that it would be hard to use. It turns out that since I already knew how to use a yo-yo and do a few tricks, that this yo-yo was VERY easy to use and easy to do even more tricks with. For someone making the next step from a $5 Duncan Yo-Yo to a nice Yo-Yo, this one will be great.

Ok, so i bought this yoyo for my little brother because like the other guy, his school has the yoyo madness.
Great yo, sleeps for about 40-50 secs after using some thin lube, and my lil bro -age 13- loves it. @Cons This thing is hellu heavy, he uses it to kill small animals sometimes, honestly. This could be a pro though, really depends on what you want. 5 extra strings, not true, no extra strings came with the one that I recieved. @Overall The extra weight is good for tricks because it keeps it sleeping when doing tricks so, while its heavy, it doesn't come back and smack you in the face at unwanted times. The whole string breaking thing, I'm not so sure about because he hasn't broken a single string yet, although I'm sure that with the weight that might be a problem. I'd say this yoyo is not good for the beginners/learners who can't throw a yoyo, but it is good for the intermediate, and maybe even advanced. Although, another reviewer said he uses a lighter yoyo to learn tricks so... Just be careful because this thing is a lead weight! For BEGINNERS or small children who want a GOOD yoyo, the Flying panda is rubber lined, a little bigger, and a lot safer. The flying squirrel is plastic, weighted to perfection/adjustments, small, and awesome. P.S The Maverick is smaller than a standard yoyo, about 2 inches in diameter. |
