I started buying these coffee-table sized collections of vintage male erotica just a few years ago starting with Taschen's "Big Penis Book" and extending through David Hurles' Old Reliable studio work to Sierra Domino's 1970s and 80s shoots of black men, among several others. Lon of New York is a name I came across quite often in reading about vintage male erotica, and I looked forward with considerable interest to my first book of his work when buying this volume. Unfortunately, I found this collection extremely disappointing. The aesthetic is the familiar Greco-Roman classicism so common to the early part of the era covered by this volume (1940-70), but in a particularly kitsch and crude fashion. Nor did I find many of the models particularly attractive or interesting. By and large they had neither the rough-trade edge of Hurles's men from the streets, the Orientalist objectified sexuality of Latino Fan Club's "Latino," or the more refined classicism in some of the photos collected by Reed Massengll's in "Uncovered." Instead, what we see here are lots of poorly posed young guys with sucked stomachs, a bit of muscularity and rather bad complexions looking rather awkward before the camera while sporting silly-looking Roman military garb and props. I came away from this collection completely baffled as to why the name Lon of New York is so often referenced in writings about vintage male erotica.

In all fairness I must add that this particular volume is only one collection of what I take to be a vast repertoire of the photographer's work. Perhaps this particular book is not representative of the bulk or the best of what he produced. I can only hope so. But I plan to sell off this particular one as soon as I find someone to take it off my hands.
