Book Description

August 1, 2002
The New York Botanical Garden is launching a series of annual engagement calendars featuring the botanical illustrations of noted artists whose works are part of the remarkable collection housed in the Garden's LuEsther T. Mertz Library. The 2003 Engagement Calendar features the work of Georg Dionysius Ehret, one of the most prominent botanical artists of the 18th century.

This handsome, hardcover datebook showcases 61 illustrations by Ehret, all from a rare and important book entitled Plantae Selectae by Christoph Jacob Trew. Plantae Selectae is one of the most exquisite and dramatic of the great botanical works and has even been called the finest ever printed in Germany.

But this engagement calendar is practical, as well as beautiful to look at and it has many touches that add to its usefulness. It’s pages are large enough to provide plenty of room in which to write appointments and reminders, yet it can still be easily slipped into a bag to travel with you. A ribbon marker helps keep your place. Year-at-a-glance calendars for past, present and future make long term planning simple to do. Unlike many engagement calendars today, it has durable hard covers and a cloth-covered spine concealing a spiral wire binding that allows it to lie flat for easy writing. It also has a pocket on the inside back cover to hold important bits of paper.

The New York Botanical Garden engagement calendar includes a listing of events and exhibitions at the Garden in 2003, a bloom schedule, as well as a listing of public gardens throughout the United States. Beyond the purely practical, it also provides a wonderful introduction to the work of Ehret, for those who are not already familiar with it.

It also makes an exceptional gift!

The New York Botanical Garden is a museum of living plant collections that offers comprehensive education programs in horticulture and plant science and sponsors research programs with its International Plant Science Center.

All proceeds are used to support The New York Botanical Garden.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful datebook!, December 4, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: New York Botanical Garden Engagement Calendar 2003 (Spiral-bound)
I'm a fan of ink on paper when it comes to keeping track of my schedule (and my family's) and if I can do it in a really handsome, durable, stylish desk calendar that has beautiful botanical illustrations, well, then, I'm really happy. I particularly like this one because it is hardcover, with an attractive cloth spine (black, though, so it won't show dirt - I will carry it around with me) and enough room to write down the too many things I have to do!

I also like the fact that it's published by The New York Botanical Garden: a beautiful place and one I'm glad to support.
