Book Description

August 15, 2003
The New York Botanical Garden Engagement Calendar for 2004 features exquisite 18th-century botanical illustrations from the first scientific study of the plants of India, Plants of the Coast of Coromandel, Selected from Drawings and Descriptions Presented to the Honorable Court of Directors of the East India Company. This rare and beautiful work by Dr. William Roxburgh (1751 - 1815) was published in installments over a 25-year period beginning in 1795. Roxburgh, a Scottish doctor with the East India Company, was an eminent botanist and horticulturist, as well as Superintendent of the Royal Botanic Garden in Calcutta. He spent most of his adult life in India and is often called the "father of Indian botany."

Plants of the Coast of Coromandel contains 300 hand-colored engravings, making it one of the most impressive publications of its era. The illustrations were selected from hundreds of drawings Roxburgh sent to Sir Joseph Banks, then President of The Royal Society, who acted as editor of the project. The illustrations are all unattributed, painted by Indian artists seeking work outside the court as the Mughal Empire declined.

The 2004 Engagement Calendar is practical as well as beautiful, and has many touches that add to its usefulness. Its pages are large enough to provide plenty of room to write appointments and reminders, yet it can still be easily slipped into a bag. A ribbon marker helps keep one's place. Year-at-a-glance calendars for past, present and future make long-term planning simple to do. Unlike many engagement calendars today, it has durable hard covers and a cloth-covered spine concealing a spiral wire binding that allows it to lie flat for easy writing. It also has a pocket on the inside back cover to hold important bits of paper.

But that’s not all. The New York Botanical Garden Engagement Calendar includes a listing of events and exhibitions at the Garden in 2004, an In Flower schedule, as well as a listing of public gardens throughout the United States.

And it makes a wonderful gift!

The New York Botanical Garden is a museum of living plant collections that offers comprehensive education programs in horticulture and plant science and sponsors research programs with its International Plant Science Center.

All proceeds support The New York Botanical Garden.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great engagement calendar, October 23, 2003

This review is from: New York Botanical Garden Engagement Calendar for 2004 (Spiral-bound)
I was just given one of these New York Botanical Garden datebooks by a friend and it's really beautiful. The cover image above doesn't do it justice! The cover material looks like fabric, although it's actually textured paper, but the spine is black fabric, which is great - looks good and won't show dirt. On the front, the year is written in gold type in Roman numerals - an elegant touch. The illustrations inside are gorgeous, one for each week, some of them quite unusual and wonderful looking! I like the pocket on the inside back cover, since I'm always stuffing my datebook full of loose pieces of paper and business cards. There's a lot of interesting information in the front of the calendar on the original work the art comes from, and in the back is useful info on the NY Botanical Garden - even a list of public gardens throughout the country. This will make a really great present for all my gardening and art-loving friends and family.
