Book Description

August 1, 2005
The delightful illustrations in The New York Botanical Garden Engagement Calendar for 2006 come from a spectacular early 18th-century work by Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (1683–1741), a wealthy German apothecary and botanist. Phytanthoza Iconographia was published in installments from 1737 to 1745 in a combined Latin and German edition. It was a remarkable pre-Linnaean attempt to classify the plant kingdom and one of the first botanical works to use color printing. Phytanthoza Iconographia contains over a thousand color plates of several thousand plants ranging from common garden flowers and herbs to exotic palms and aloes in decorative cachepots. A number of different artists produced the illustrations. The best known and most talented of these was Georg Dionysius Ehret, whose first published work, although unsigned, was in Phytanthoza Iconographia. Ehret was not only an extremely gifted artist, he also knew his plants and went on to become a prominent figure in 18th-century botanical art. The color plates are vibrant to this day and Weinmann’s opus remains a work of great beauty and impressive scope. In addition to its good looks, the Engagement Calendar has many unique touches that add to its usefulness. It has durable hard covers and a cloth-covered spine concealing a spiral wire binding that allows it to lie flat for easy writing. Its pages are large enough to write appointments and reminders, yet it can still be easily slipped into a bag. A ribbon marker helps keep one's place. Year-at-a-glance calendars for past, present, and future make long-term planning simple to do. It also has a pocket on the inside back cover to hold important bits of paper. But that’s not all! The New York Botanical Garden Engagement Calendar includes a listing of public gardens throughout the United States, as well as 2006 events and exhibitions at the Garden, a map, and an In Flower guide to the Garden's plantings. 7” x 8 3/4”, hardcover with cloth spine, concealed spiral wire binding, full color throughout, over 60 botanical illustrations, week-to-a-page format, ribbon marker, pocket on inside back cover, Year-at-a-Glance calendars for 2005, 2006 and 2007, New York Botanical Garden Events & Exhibitions listing, New York Botanical Garden In Flower Schedule and map, Listing of Public Gardens throughout the United States.

This review is from: The New York Botanical Garden Engagement Calendar for 2006 (Spiral-bound)
I found this beautiful calendar when visiting the New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx (also beautiful) and I'm definitely going to buy more of them. What a great holiday gift! Anyone who loves flowers or gardening (like me!) will really like it. The illustrations are gorgeous - and it's a good size, easy to write in. It's got this happy sunflower cover that feels and looks like fabric, although of course it's not. And the thing I really like is the pocket on the inside of the back cover where I can stick all the papers I'm always carrying around with me. I'll never understand people who use palm pilots - this is so much better!
