Review

Don't buy another plant without consulting this super-useful new book! This is one of my new all-time favorite garden books that I'll bet you'll find ends up dog-eared and worn, rather than pretty but unused on the coffee table. Don't leave home for the garden center without it. (The Patriot News )

Appleton and Trigg have written a book that will answer the "What will I use question?" for most if not all landscaping situations. This book is an easy read and packed full of information. It is a great edition for any gardening library. (Danville, Va Register )

Dozens of plant lists citing a ppropriate choices with regard to all sorts of requirements, from the obvious (such as low-maintenance) to the esoteric (such as groundcovers for cracks and crevices). The books' authors also include ideas and suggestions on a vast range of topics from regional horticultural experts. Gardeners can never have too many plants. A list-lover's dream come true. (Hortideas )

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent guidebook, March 26, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: New York/Mid-Atlantic Gardener's Book of Lists (Paperback)
Our gardening consultants use this book constantly to help homeowners decide which plants work best in different areas of the landscape. There is one or two minor outdated listings, such as recommending leyland cypresses which have been overplanted in this region and recently have been found to suffer from an incurable canker disease that can kill whole rows of trees. However, customers can use this terrific guidebook and then call their extension office or trusted nursery to confirm their selections before making big purchases. A little homework before planting will reward them with healthier, longer lived plants and minimal need for the use of toxic chemicals.
With more people making major plant purchases based on price at big box stores, instead of wisely going to nurseries where the employees are more knowledgeable, it is important to have a book like this available to the average homeowner. Also, this book is geared specifically to the mid-atlantic region's unusual weather challenges.
Excellent book, well written and well organized, a great gift for most gardeners.
