Book Description

November 2006
This stunning book is the long-awaited result of an extensive review of New York painters and their widely diverse works. It presents an overview of styles, mediums, subjects, even philosophies of art found in galleries, museums, and artists' studios of present-day New York, the oft-acknowledged Art Capital of the contemporary world. Although you may recognize the names and works of many, this company of 100 painters also features works by artists less celebrated, though no less deserving of attention. Expect to find recent works, as well as paintings from an earlier period of an artist's oeuvre -- as near as Kelynn Alder's "Coney Island," painted specifically for this book, and as distant as George Tooker's iconic allegory, "Subway," painted in 1950. Brief biographical sketches accompany each artist's work, providing insight into their emotional and philosophical connection with art as well as their schooling and accomplishments. Experience for yourself this visual feast showcasing the unique works of 100 gifted New York painters. This book is a must-have addition for the library of any art connoisseur and/or collector.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Magical Discovery, January 16, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: 100 New York Painters (Hardcover)
Reading this book led to a magical discovery of the art of our time. Unlike most other art books, the selection of well known and less known artists is not a repeat of the familiar names. Rather, it reflects the seasoned hand of the living painters in New York. The book is composed of the works by women and men of artistic sophistication and a distinguished exhibition record. Some of them are stars of the established commercial galleries. Some are represented by alternative art spaces. The inclusion of the diverse group of painters is bold and unconventional, for the majority of books are centered around the former. This book, with its highly successful reproductions, reveals more the reality of our time. There are indeed more dedicated painters than what the traditional theorists would like for us to believe. Through her connoisseur's eye, the author Cynthia Dantzic brought to us a window to art so appetizing and distinct, it is a testimony of contemporary painting made in New York.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully produced coffee table art book, September 6, 2009

I also bought, "100 Artists of the West Coast" by this publisher. It was interesting to see the difference between the two books with their different authors. I enjoyed them both, but it was funny to see how perfectly they echoed their geographic zeitgeist... laid back, (all about the art, no resume flaunting), wild and crazy West Coast, versus, up tight, status/money conscious (boring listing of awards and shows, with little about the art), New York. All the biggest names from the past, who are still alive, are in this book. Love seeing the artist photos or self-portraits, as well as their artwork.
