Just recently I become interested in crosswords for the first time, so I picked up this book. The puzzles in it are for the most part very fun and pretty doable, even for a crossword beginner.

My one complaint about this volume is that there are way too many recycled clues in the fifty different puzzles. Perhaps there are just certain basic clues that are common to most puzzles, but I found -- and I am not exaggerating -- no less than 50 clues which were used in multiple puzzles. And I am not talking about just the same answer, but essentially the same clue. After a while this became very annoying. Not a gigantic deal, but it is something that bugged me a little.

Three stars.

After really enjoying volume 1 through 4 of this series, I bought volume 7. The puzzles are just as great in this one as in volumes 1 through 4, but the titles of the puzzles are missing! This removes some of the fun, as part of doing a crossword is figuring out how the title relates to the puzzle theme. This is an incredible oversight to me--the book claims it was edited by Will Shortz, but I doubt he even looked at it or surely this would have been caught. You're better off sticking to the volumes that are complete.

After seeing the movie "Wordplay," my wife became interested in solving the NY Times crossword puzzle and is now addicted. This book was the perfect gift for a vacation to a place where getting the newspaper is not so easy.

Large type and letter boxes. Nice quality paper makes erasing easier. Spiral binding - one puzzle to a page 8.5x11 - answers in back. A nice mix of easier and challenging clues that make the puzzles a little bit of a challenge without making them impossible and overwhelming for the beginner. I wasn't sure I wanted the challenge of crosswords, but wanted to add more variety to my brain workouts. I found this to be a nice introduction to crosswords and chose this volume because of the discounted price. The puzzles do have titles and a general theme.

LOVE THIS SERIES--I don't want to be challenged--want to feel that I have accomplished something daily (do two a day), and these easy crosswords allow me that great opportunity. YEA for Will Shortz. Keep them coming.

I bought two for Christmas and gave one to my Mom. I call her and we do a puzzle at least once a week on the phone while we each look at our own copy. Easy and so much fun! My Mom loves it and it is so much more fun than "So...what did you do today?" I am buying another volume for us both right now! These books stay open and are large and easy to read.

When I work difficult crossword puzzles (like Sunday NYT's puzzles, I don't always have the feeling that "I know this, and just have to relie on my memory to come up with the word. When I work these "Easy" puzzles, it's still sometimes a challenge for an 84 year old, who is having memory problems, but I challenge my memory with the knowledge that I know this word, I just have to bring it to mind. I have about six books of this series, and have enjoyed them all. I work crosswords every day, several hours a day, usually......so I go though quite a few puzzle books. I keep a list of the books I have completed and keep tabs on the latest ones in this series that Amazon has in stock. I hope you never run out. I am indebted to Will Shortz!
