Probably my fault, but although the puzzles are really tough (which is what I like), the book is small and so is the print. I really should have paid more attention to the description. I'm not sure I'll be able to use the book because of that.

Since I have done many, many NY Times crosswords, I've come to expect that even in the difficult puzzles, there will be lots of clues that have appeared in older puzzles, crossword boilerplate, if you will. But I've been pleasantly surprised by the relative paucity of them in the puzzles I've worked on so far. It may be because it's a new collection, but whatever the reason, I'm very pleased with it.

I found most of the crosswords in the book pleasantly difficult, a few impossible, and others not so difficult. Overall, it's a good choice for people who enjoy crosswords. Also, the small size makes it handy to bring in waiting rooms or airports.

I'm a serious puzzler (even attend the National Crossword Puzzle Tournament) , and these are fun and challenging to do.

Very difficult but enjoyable. I'm not much on current pop culture, so I have to sneak up on many solutions.

The puzzles in this book are of the NY Times Friday and Saturday degree of difficulty. The temptation to peek can be overwhelming sometimes. So far I have done a couple dozen, not always without help. Thank heavens for a smart phone with internet access! (Somehow I feel less like a cheat using the net than blatantly peeking at the answers.) These puzzles are definitely for experienced solvers and will test all but the very best.

I think the crosswords "Ferocious Crosswords" NY Times collection puzzles were overall harder/better but collections of only difficult crosswords are hard to find and this is one of them. Those who enjoy Friday and Saturday NY Times daily crosswords should like this book, although some of the crosswords seem easier.

Some crosswords are all about being clever and interesting for the puzzle solver. Others are all about the puzzle's creator being clever. There's a big difference. The latter is just narcissistic, annoying and not very satisfying. This book falls in to the latter category.

I gave this as a gift to two friends who are crossword lovers, and both enjoyed it very much. It is a much higher level of difficulty than anything I could do, but they both thought it was great. As others have noted, the print is small in this book.

Quality of puzzles - 5

When they say "difficult", they don't mean "challenging" - they mean "downright hard." I enjoy challenging puzzles, but some of these, I didn't even know what the clues meant.
