About the Author

Will Shortz has been the crossword puzzle editor of The New York Times since 1993. He is also the puzzlemaster on NPR’s Weekend Edition Sunday and is founder and director of the annual American Crossword Puzzle Tournament. He has edited countless books of crossword puzzles, Sudoku, KenKen, and all manner of brain-busters.

I love all of these NY Times Sunday Crossword books. The spiral binding makes them very easy to use. My partner and I do one of these puzzles together every day. They really exercise your brain, which is important for us since we are both in our late 60s. The only shortcoming: the print is pretty small, which also challenges our "mature" eyesight.

I love working Sunday New York Times crosswords because they're challenging. I enjoy cracking the code on the underlying theme (which, I admit, I don't always manage to do).

The books in this collection provide old Sunday NYTimes crosswords. Sometimes you have to be aware of the time period when the puzzle first appeared, as clues can be topical. I like the spiral binding, so I can open the book to one puzzle at a time, and it lies flat. The heavier paper covers also make the book sturdy enough to hold in my hands and write in.

My only complaint is that I don't like the texture of the paper. It's uncoated, which is good, so it takes pencil well. But the surface is fairly rough, so it's easy to smear pencilled-in letters. In the Sunday NYTimes magazine, the puzzle is printed on coated paper -- not so great for pencils.
