This review is from: Yorkshire from the Air (Hardcover)
As I am a passionate aviation photographer I will direct most of my comments to the photographic aspects in the book, and let others discuss the specific location and historic aspects in greater detail.

Jason Hawkes is ONE OF THE BEST air to ground photographers I have ever seen. However that is certainly NOT reflected in this book. I am not too sure what the reason for the abundance of pixilated images is, however there are a great many of them in this book. I do know that Jason Hawkes claims that he shoots mostly film. So my inclination is to believe that it was in the editing and printing that caused the numerous distortions in images. The photographs almost look like jpg images that have been reused too many times.

Another thing that I didn't like about the book was the far too few quality air to ground close ups. I agree with panoramic shots to set the scene, but then there should be several detailed air to ground close ups. When you fly air to ground photo shoots, you have a truly unique perspective on the world. Part of the thrill of looking at these shots is capturing the flavor of the subject on the ground from a very different angle. True there are air space restrictions etc. However after having seen Jason Hawkes air to ground images elsewhere, I do know that he is a much better photographer than we see in this book. To be honest I would have loved to have seen what was left out of the book. Because quite clearly the choice of images, the editing and printing of the images are not as good as they could have been.

If you are looking for a scenic Yorkshire from the air book the subjects are about 4 stars of 5 with many interesting commentaries upon the subjects. However for image choices and image printing I will give this book 3 stars.
