This is a marvelous introduction to the charming, curious, attentive and loving little dog, the Yorkie! Yip, yip, yip, yip!!!, September 5, 2009
This review is from: Yorkshire Terriers Are the Best! (Best Dogs Ever) (Library Binding)
Almost everyone would like a loving companion. There are cat people and dog people and if you want a dog, don't have a lot of room for one you just might want to consider the Yorkshire terrier, or Yorkie. They are a "brave, bold" dog and also have a lot of zip. They are a very smart dog and make "great watchdogs." Many people, who don't care for them, say they are yippy dogs. If you don't care for that sort of behavior, read no further because Yorkies are probably not your cup of tea. They are a fearless critter and will "often take on much bigger dogs," even though they only weigh in between four and seven pounds and are only seven to nine inches tall. Still interested?
They have unusual coloring and their hair is long, straight and silky. They will need to be groomed on a daily basis even though they don't shed a lot and you will have to take them to a groomer. They are an energetic dog and love to play, but because they are small you have to take care not to injure them . . . no roughhousing! Just looking into the eyes of this dog will charm you easily, but the author stresses that you need to be careful choosing this or any other dog to fit your family's lifestyle. For example, this "active, curious canine" isn't crazy about being left alone and just might decide to chew up your shoes. You will learn about their history, how they are related to the Scottish terrier, famous people who own Yorkies, what category the AKC places them in (that's easy!), how much exercise they need, basic items you'll need before bringing home your dog, the need for proper veterinarian care, what to feed them and more!
This is a marvelous introduction to this little charmer. The book is well written and researched and you'll be thrilled with all the fun, frolicking photographs that pepper the book. I especially enjoyed the one of the BIG man holding a Yorkie. Needless to say, they are both smiling! There is an assortment of interesting and informative sidebars scattered throughout the book. This is one of several books in the series, "The Best Dogs Ever." In the back of the book is an index, a glossary and additional recommended book and website resources. Hmmmm, I'm still wondering if that Yorkie is that belongs to that man!
