Book Description

May 1, 2004
Included on the Yosemite National Park hiking map are the Tuolumne Meadows, representing the high mountains; the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir area with its mountain desert; the Yosemite Valley displaying magnificient waterfalls & granite monuments, including El Capitan & Half Dome; and the Mariposa Grove/Wawona area with the towering sequoias.

Trail Tracks Hiking Maps are full color aerial panoramic terrain views with hiking trails color-keyed to degree of difficulty (similar to ski area maps). These waterproof, tear-resistant maps enable hikers to visualize trails from trailhead to destination. They are helpful in planning and completing day hikes and backpack trips.

The maps are available in three formats: (1) folded maps for one's pack; (2) flat and (3) flat-laminated for hanging on the wall.

The reverse side of each map provides reference data for each trail including distance, elevation gains and ecosystems encountered.

2.0 out of 5 stars A rough overview to Yosemite, but overpriced, April 13, 2001

This is a schematic pictoral map of Yosemite with trails marked based on difficulty. Each trail is accompanied by a distance and elevation gain, and on the back these are ranked by difficulty and have tick marks for features such as waterfalls, views etc. This is not that different from the free maps that the park visitors centre hands out.

Overall this is probably best suited to someone who has never been to Yosemite and doesn't want to use a regular map. On the positive side you could use the map to decide if a hike is within your ability and taste, and to plan and follow the trail. On the other hand the schematic nature makes it hard to work out exactly where the trials go, and what the topography is at any point. Anyone who can read a map would be better off with the Guide to Yosemite High Sierra Trails, which is a proper map and sells for $2.50.

4.0 out of 5 stars Overpriced but valuable, February 20, 2004

I agree that this map is overpriced, but if you spend much time hiking in Yosemite, it's invaluable. This is especially true if you hike in Tuloumne Meadows and the High Country, the map is especially strong in this area. The map itself is quite out of scale and is by no means a topographical study; it's more intended to give the hiker a broad panorama of the areas they trek across.

Many times a year I hike from Cathedral Lakes in the High Country to Happy Isles trailhead, on the Valley floor. It's a 22 miles day hike and it's awesome. Never before did I realize the scope of the hike until I followed it on this map. You really will use it repeatedly. It's printed on high quality, glossy paper which withstands moisture, water spillage and general wear and tear. I've carried it in my pack on the John Muir Trail and it withstands most any punishment.

The artwork is beautiful as well. What is eight bucks in the scheme of things? I spend every weekend in the summer at Yosemite and I can't recommend this highly enough, especially for you Tuloumne Meadows fans. Enjoy!
