4.0 out of 5 stars pleasant game for those rainy afternoons
This is actually a fairly addicting puzzle game. Yoshi, not the same as Yoshi's Cookie, was released back in the NES's final days and didn't receive much notice. Okay so it got SOME notice, mostly just to compare it to Tetris (something that seems to happen to many puzzle games).

Compared to other puzzle games, I think Yoshi stands up quite well. It's a...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good Tetris like game
This is a pretty good game, much like Tetris. There is an original concept though, because little monsters drop down like blocks. They drop down, you do not turn them, instead Yoshi is at the bottom of the screen holding up four plates (to collect the monsters), and you move him around, and pivot these plates to collect the monsters. They drop down, you do not turn them, instead Yoshi is at the bottom of the screen holding up four plates (to collect the monsters), and you move him around, and pivot these plates to collect the monsters. Its not that simple though, the only way to kill these monsters is to capture them into egg halves that drop down. First get a lower half of an egg, drop a few monsters onto the half egg, then drop the top half of the egg. Then the eggs, squeeze together killing the enemies! Like a verticle Tetris!

Compared to other puzzle games, I think Yoshi stands up quite well. It's a fine puzzle game. I can't think of anything else to say. Okay, I'll tell you a story.

I wanted this game REALLY bad when it was first released. So I went to Delaware with my mom, and we bought the game at a store called Woolworths, which is now out of business (in fact, I think the whole company is out of business). Before they went out of business, they reduced the price for all their video games, and in doing so, made many gamers very happy. Unfortunately, this game was still pretty expensive which made the trip to Delaware not as satisfying as we had hoped. But I still bought Yoshi that day. Sorry for boring you.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of my all-time favorites, September 10, 2008

I'm a fan of many types of video games. My favorites include the franchises God of War, Castlevania, and Final Fantasy. Yoshi might seem a little out of place in a collection with God of War, Metal Gear Solid and Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, but I will admit I love this game. I've played it ever since I was a kid when it first came out. It is the one of the few games that I keep going back to. I've read reviews saying it is a Tetris clone and it is unoriginal. I disagree with those statements especially the one about it being unoriginal. If someone can tell me of a game where the columns are switched from the bottom I will take it back. And it has about as much similarity to Tetris and Contra does to Super Mario Bros.
Anyway, it is simple and fun. There aren't any chain reactions to be set up like in Dr. Mario or Puzzle League/Tetris Attack/Panel de Pon. You match two like characters vertically and they disappear or you sandwich a bunch of pieces between the top and bottom halves of a Yoshi egg and get rid of them that way. You move Mario left and right and press a button to make him turn around making two columns switch places. So unlike other falling block games you control the pieces that have already landed rather than the falling pieces.
The gameplay is not as deep as most of the other matching games. But it is truely relaxing and I've never become tired of it. I'm a big Dr. Mario fan but most of the time I prefer this game.
If you are a fan of Nintendo's other matching games then you will probably like this one too.

When I got this game, I had to learn how to play it myself. I THOUGHT it was a "simple" matching game. When I got to the eggshells, however, I noticed it made the game a BIT more challenging! Instead of JUST {Sigh, matching pairs, SO boring!}, it's matching pairs, but leaving one space open for a bottom half of shell, then stacking, but NOT matching items on the bottom half. THEN, when the TOP half of the egg shows up, watch your score soar! I'm GLAD I bought this game!

I liken this game on the level of strategy such as Tetris and Dr. Mario, where you need to plan ahead your moves.

4.0 out of 5 stars Another puzzle game., June 27, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Yoshi (Video Game)
This is the first yoshi game that ever came out. It is also for the GB to so it got more popular. I thought it would be different but i found out that it was like my tetris game. U match up things that fall and try to get a high score. The graphics r just like other nes games and the sound is enteresting. It is just like DR. mario unstead of the pills comeing down its the monsters. It gets tireing after a while but it is fun.

2.0 out of 5 stars Yoshi game, September 10, 2008
= Fun:2.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Yoshi (Video Game)
This game for me is a weak attempt to copy the game 'Tetris'. It just isnt as fun or challenging as i had hoped. The only plus that i see with this game is that it would be preferred over tetris by children because of the colorful graphics and cartoon look. So if you have children and are looking for a good clean kid friendly game to keep them entertained and expand their hand/eye coordination then this game might be a good choice.
