An awe-inspiring synthesis of the classical & the avant-garde,
By Scriabinmahler (UK) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Yoshimatsu: Symphony No. 2; Guitar Concerto; Threnody to Toki, Op. 12 (Audio CD)
I bought this CD for the amazingly innovative guitar concerto 'Pegasus Effect', originally written for the great Japanese guitarist, Kazuhito Yamashita. Yoshimatsu follows the classical guitar concerto forms of Rodrigo and Villa-Lobos, but combines them with his Kaleidoscopic musical language. The effect is an awe-inspiring synthesis of the lyrical and the experimental, the classical and the avant-garde. Yamashita made a pretty impressive recording of the work with RCA, but Craig Ogden has the advantage of better recording quality and BBC PO's wonderfully expressive playing. Ogden is technically solid and the tone he produces is imaginatively colourful.
