5.0 out of 5 stars simply hilarious, April 19, 2010
This review is from: Yotsuba&!, Vol. 8 (Paperback)
Yotsuba's everyday adventures with the 8th installment of the series are just as enjoyable as the previous books. This book made me laugh so much, that it is probably my favorite book out of the rest. It is also the biggest book being around 220 pages long...i had my doubts about this manga when i first started reading it, but i am glad that i actually got a chance to enjoy it, i cannot wait for volume 9 to come out

This book and its series help remind us what it was like to be a kid and do all sorts of crazy things. When ever I read any of this series books I am either smiling or laughing. Volume 8 in particular has its funny parts such as when Yotsuba pretends its opposite day, or how she likes when it rains and runs out into a typhoon. Also there is some sort of japanese (religious?) cultural event Yotsuba takes part in which I am not familiar with but Yotsuba makes it comical. All in all this is a fun read which can make just about anyone smile and laugh.

The laughs last through repeated readings. The characters are all drawn sharping and skillfully and they all come alive. Great character-driven laughs and warm smiles.

5.0 out of 5 stars Yotsuba and Festivals: Cute Manga Series Goes on, March 4, 2011
This review is from: Yotsuba&!, Vol. 8 (Paperback)
Volume 8 of "Yotsuba&!" features two big events. One is a "gakuensai" or an annual school festival, a staple of Japanese high school. The other is an "omatsuri," a shrine/temple festival (remember the shrine in the first volume?). A five-year-old girl Yotsuba, recently moved in with her "Daddy," will join these joyful events for the first time in her life. Some amusing situations (and misunderstandings) ensue.

Some characters come back in this volume, including "Miss Stake," Fuka's friend Yotsuba made a cake with in Volume 6. Minor characters are not forgotten such as the female officer Yotsuba once met and gave a flower. Creator Kiyohiko Azuma's carefully planned storytelling is evident in the shrine festival section, where Miura and Jumbo appear in the most unexpected (and even hilarious) way.

Like in previous volumes, details play a significant role in the world of "Yotsuba&!," giving each episode a realistic touch, for example, the school festival scene that captures its convivial atmosphere. Also, the candy and the snack given to Yotsuba at the festival really exist. They are all popular Japanese snacks you can buy at any convenience stores in Japan. (By the way, the "Apollo" candy (p.152) is actually a cone-shaped strawberry chocolate, "Meiji - Apollo Strawberry Chocolate Candy." Check it out on Amazon.)

Time passes and season changes and it is autumn now. But Yotsuba remains the same as ever in this delightful comic series, a cute little girl whose everyday life is sort of adventures.
