My long held belief is that you can effectively lead others only when able to effectively lead yourself. As a veteran operations leader, I have read my share of books on management, self-improvement and leadership development. If you are seeking expert guidance on this topic - You, According to Them - is a true gem. Introspection and reflection alone do not get the job done in our fast-paced world. Accurate assessment of the issue with a specific action plan does. Whether you are looking for insight on leading others or you are interested in finding your own blind spots, Sara's real-life case studies will serve you well. Her talents as a corporate leader, executive coach and researcher come together in a perfect storm to provide an enjoyable read with highly actionable content. It's one thing to identify a blind spot, it's quite another to do something about it. Sara's book gives you the tools and strategies you can put to use immediately. I highly recommend this book!

I agree with the raves offered by all previous reviewers. I find this book extraordinary for the insight offered to grow one's self-awareness and professional career. The examples of real managers along with practical action items make it extremely valuable. As Sara says, the relational more than the rational is the key to boosting our influence and impact, and she gives all types of managers keys to understanding AND action items for improving how we relate to others at work. You will find yourself in one or more of the 10 personas and quickly see the work you have to do to break through from what is holding you back. Sara gives each persona a gift of a quote from a wise teacher. Consider this from Bruce Lee, martial arts expert and actor, for counseling those who have a tendency to be inflexible: "Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind."

What I believe may make the book even more valuable to managers is the guidance for leading project teams and direct reports. If you can see the blind spots that others have, you learn how to manage them more effectively and you have tools to help them improve their work results. You manage others better by understanding how their work styles and personalities affect others and by applying these insights as an executive coach. Sara effectively coaches you as manager to makes sure your staff work productively with others and excel in the value they contribute. Everyone wins!

A wonderful benefit also not mentioned by others are the powerful metaphors that Sara uses to bring her teaching to life.

You, According to Them compassionately examines the kinds of foibles that you, the guy in the office next to you, your boss or your assistant might struggle with. These are the things that make people tough to work with but aren't easy to pinpoint. Unlike incompetence or laziness, they're not concrete enough to get you fired but sufficient to get you passed over. Again and again.

This book helps the Lone Ranger figure out how to express his capabilities without becoming a liability and the Perpetual Doer understand how to acquire the Executive Presence he needs to get to the C-Suite.

There's a good chance you'll find yourself in this book, which isn't necessarily pleasant, though Sara Canaday writes with great empathy. But at least now you can tackle whatever behaviors you have that are sabotaging your efforts to succeed.

I've read a lot of leadership books over the years. What I find particularly compelling about "You According to Them" is how each chapter is supported by real life work examples we can relate to. More than likely, we have all run across more than a few of the types of personalities described by Sara in her book. This book is a terrific blend of astute observation combined with a "workbook" format that allows you to make progress on your own. I would highly recommend it to anyone who wants to understand how the blind spots in your personality affect not only those around you, but impacts your career in ways you may not have imagined.

Powerful perceptions from others require a difficult to describe intangible skill-set for us to understand, change, and manage them. Sara focuses on the Perception Gap in her book, requiring a careful applied self awareness to fight our noble intentions, or subconscious realities ignoring the change required in certain settings. Sara identifies the top perception gaps, and breaks them down in clear concise coaching moments. She helps us understand our reputations and manage the change needed towards personal success. I will make this book required reading for all of my Coaching Clients.

While we all want to think it does not matter what others think about us, it directly impacts our careers. This book shows you the different types of mistakes that people make in their actions at work... and how that can sideline their chance to be promoted, etc...

I saw myself (or the parts I dont like about myself) in the book, and you will see your blind-spots, too. But it is through such discovery that we can improve. Knowing how others view you, and the things you can do to remedy the issues, will help you advance.
