My long held belief is that you can effectively lead others only when able to effectively lead yourself. As a veteran operations leader, I have read my share of books on management, self-improvement and leadership development. If you are seeking expert guidance on this topic - You, According to Them - is a true gem. Introspection and reflection alone do not get the job done in our fast-paced world. Accurate assessment of the issue with a specific action plan does. Whether you are looking for insight on leading others or you are interested in finding your own blind spots, Sara's real-life case studies will serve you well. Her talents as a corporate leader, executive coach and researcher come together in a perfect storm to provide an enjoyable read with highly actionable content. It's one thing to identify a blind spot, it's quite another to do something about it. Sara's book gives you the tools and strategies you can put to use immediately. I highly recommend this book!

A very insightful and quick read. Sara is an expert in helping people identify their bind spots- what others know about you that are hidden from your knowledge and perception of self. There are tips and reflection pages to help you understand and get insight to other's perceptions. I saw myself in two of the archetypes and will definitely go into my new job with my eyes wide open. I recommend this book to those who may be wondering why they aren't achieving the level of success the expect in their career.

I thoroughly enjoyed this professional development book. I don’t think there is enough focus on how perception can be the ultimate side-kick or the ultimate villain in not only your professional life but your personal life as well. It doesn’t matter how well you think you’ve explained or stated something to somebody. What it really comes down to is how they perceive what you’re saying. This book is broken down into sections based on what your “professional blind spot” could be. As an example, mine was definitely “No Crying in Baseball”, where the author explains that many individuals believe that if they remove their emotions from the decision making process that they will be viewed as calm, collected, and analytical. But unfortunately, many a time, this is viewed as dis-compassionate and insensitive and can make individuals feel that you don’t care about their professional well-being.

This was a short read and is set up so that it can be viewed over and over again, even if its only to review those chapters that are specific to your "blind spot". I would recommend it to EVERYONE!

We tell our children that it doesn’t matter what other people think of us, but if our reputation or how others view us interferes with our ability to perform well at work, then we are wrong. Truth is, how we lead, how we follow, and how well we work with others determines our success in business.

Sara is a brilliant business coach who identifies categories of people by their strengths that can sometimes turn into problems. Best of all, she ends every chapter with an “If this is you?” section and action steps to transform our behavior to get better results from the people around us.

When reading it this book I had a few “ouch!” moments when I identified a little too closely with her examples, but she kindly reassures readers that she has been some of these case studies as well. Somehow that made me feel better.

Thinking about getting a business coach to help you move forward in your career? Save yourself a ton of money and get this book first. I say this as an executive business coach. If all of my clients read this book and took Sara’s recommendations, some of them might not need me.

Warmly,
Mary

Excellent reading the thought-provoking. Wish I had known this when I was younger and working for another; when I had my own business as well.

Excellent. This is a very concise book that points out a handful of typical character traits that prevent you and me from getting ahead. Chances are, you will see yourself described in this book and will realize with the help of the author how your behavior, no matter how well intended or innocent, impacts others negatively and sets you up for failure and even sabotage by others. You may see yourself in one or more character traits described, as I did, and be able to identify others including your family, friends or even "frienemies." This then will prove to you that how they see YOU is spot on cause the way the author describes how you see THEM is right on the money. I highly recommend this fast read if you want to get ahead in the business world but also if you want to get along with your family and gather friends, not enemies.

This gave me insight as to why I could get passed up for promotions. I feel more confident now realizing working hard is not enough to get ahead. Perception holds more impact than you think it does.

You, According to Them compassionately examines the kinds of foibles that you, the guy in the office next to you, your boss or your assistant might struggle with. These are the things that make people tough to work with but aren't easy to pinpoint. Unlike incompetence or laziness, they're not concrete enough to get you fired but sufficient to get you passed over. Again and again.

This book helps the Lone Ranger figure out how to express his capabilities without becoming a liability and the Perpetual Doer understand how to acquire the Executive Presence he needs to get to the C-Suite.

There's a good chance you'll find yourself in this book, which isn't necessarily pleasant, though Sara Canaday writes with great empathy. But at least now you can tackle whatever behaviors you have that are sabotaging your efforts to succeed.
