1.0 out of 5 stars Knights are appealing, but the theology? Yikes!
I don't know if I can express my disdain for the theology expressed by this supposedly allegorical tale without spoiling the "surprise" of the story line. Let's just say that while my son loves the knights in the book I have a number of objections to the portrayal of the King, strongly suggested to be like God the Father. God does not send his servants into...

5.0 out of 5 stars Learn the Song by heart, July 5, 2004
This review is from: With You All the Way (Hardcover)
"The three strongest warriors in the kingdom each wanted to marry the daughter of the king. The king had promised each a chance--a test to see which was worthy of his daughter. And now the time for the test had arrived." As the knights, Carlisle, Alon, and Cassidon learn of their test they feel a stab of fear. They are all given the choice of one companion to accompany them on their quest. So who will win the hand of the princess? Carlisle the strongest, Alon the the swiftest or Cassidon the wisest? And how did the winner do it? This is storytelling perfection. Wonderful story, lively characters, gorgeous, expressive illustrations, good use of conflict, interesting resolution, and strong takeaway value. A story your child or grandchild should enjoy over and over and learn many valuable lessons that he/she can apply to his/her life. Of all of Max's children stories I read to my daughter, this is my favorite.
Soar!

5.0 out of 5 stars Another Great Story By Max Lucado, July 4, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: With You All the Way (Hardcover)
Max Lucado writes amazing stories for children and this one is no different. Through out the whole story you learn more about God and how He can and will be with you all the way throughout life's journeys. Every time i open one of his books I learn so much. Mr. Lucado's books especially poin out good Christian teachings in ways that children can understand the best. I can't wait until I read the rest of the book like this one. I read this book in about 5 minutes and I loved it. The story is a simple one but an amazing one. I grew up in church and the moral of this is one tha tI have heard many times already. Thsi story put it into different words that I know my children will love as much as I did. Each prince is given the chance to marry the king's daugher but first they must make it through the forest. No one has even entered the forset and then left it. THe king's special glute will guide them. If they loose site if it they will be lost. How do they make it though? Which one will make it first? Who will be thir one companion? So many questions. Read the book it is a childrens book made for all ages. Enjoy the lessons hidden within

5.0 out of 5 stars A Parable for Children, November 3, 2006

Lucado has a gift to teach important lessons through simple parables. I read this to my children, and they immediately picked out that the characters were a comparison of Christ and us, and our roles. They asked questions, discussed what they thought things meant, and asked to read this book again and again. My seven year old says this is her favorite book, and has read it on her own many times. The illustrations are wonderful, but the story itself is why I will treasure this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blatantly Christian and wonderful, July 6, 2008
This review is from: With You All the Way (Hardcover)
So I love this book. It's blatantly Christian, but for a story that is basically told as a fairy tale? Wonderful. I still bawl every time I read it.

The story is simple enough: three knights have a race through a dangerous wood in order to win the hand of the beautiful princess. The greatest peril of the wood is mocking voices... this leads into plenty of other Christian symbols that hopefully will be appreciated for what they are. Some Christians may complain of just how their God is used, but I think they're just trying to whine. It's enchanting as a fairy tale and as a powerful message.

5.0 out of 5 stars An parable about God's love, January 15, 2011
This review is from: With You All the Way (Hardcover)
When the King looks for a husband for his daughter, he calls in the three strongest and most able-bodied knights in the kingdom, all of whom want to marry her. One of the knights is known for his fierce sword, one for his speed, and one for his quick mind. He gives the knights a challenge; the winner will be the king's new son-in-law.

The knights must make it to the king's castle by going through the Hemlock forest. The forest is a dark, fearful place, home of the Hopenots, small but crafty creatures that strike fear even in a knight's heart. No one has ever made it safely through the forest.

In order to make to complete the task, the knights are instructed to follow the song of the king's flute. There are only two special flutes in the kingdom, one owned by the king and the other by his son, the prince. Both play the same sweet song. The king tells the knights he will play his flute three times each day, providing the men with an audio signal for their journey back to the castle.

Each knight is permitted to take one person along with them. The knight that wins the princess's heart is the one that learns to listen only for the king's song.

With You All the Way, written by popular and prolific author Max Lucado is, like most of his children's stories, a parable about God and how He cares for us.

The illustrations by Chuck Gillies are beautifully done with so much clarity and detail they look very life-like.

What I Like: Everything.

What I Dislike: Nothing.

God does not send his servants into life-threatening peril as a test. He does not abandon us.

Enough said.
