Editorial Reviews

Vinyl LP pressing. 2011 debut full-length album from singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Pat Grossi AKA Active Child. You Are All I See, is indebted to the sounds of the 1980s, from New Order's drums-and-synths to danceable Hip-Hop beats, and it's all topped off with soaring R&B melodies. The album's first single, 'Playing House,' features guest vocals from Tom Krell, the crooner of lo-fi R&B project How to Dress Well.

This seems to be a "thing" lately, a phase that indie music is going through: dark, dreamy, shimmery music with an '80s synth sound. All the kids are doing it. Thing is, none of them are doing it half as well as Active Child. With its sultry instrumentation and choir-boy vocals, it's like an electronic-gospel-rock-opera for the 22nd century - current and futuristic, while borrowing from the past. This album is incredible; I'm so glad I discovered it. (Another great Amazon recommendation - way to keep earning my dollars, Amazon!)

I do have to say that I have some favorites - See Thru Eyes, High Priestess, Ancient Eye - and love its ethereal moments better than the more straightforward pop/R&B influenced songs. But that said, the album works as a whole, and I like every song. Definitely one of my favorite recent albums, and in a time of very good music.

I grew up in the 80s, and I must admit this album startles my nostalgic appreciation for those sounds and styles. It exceeds that genre entirely however with a sophisticated and modern polish. The vocals/singing and synthy quality might be compared to a stripped-down M83 with a harp.

When I came across Active Child on a list of "If you like this then you'll like this" list I thought I knew what I was going to get. I was expecting something like Sam Smith mixed with M83. I saw that the creator, Pat Grossi, was part of and trained with the Philadelphia Boys Choir but I didn't think that would make a difference.

And then the music started...and I said "Oh, he's an angel." right before I died and his voice brought me back to life.

I love music and male vocalists are my favorite but it's not until you hear a person who has an amazing talent that has been clasically trained so you realize how much of a difference something like training with a choir can make. Let's talk about Pat Grossi's voice. It's transcendent. I'm not even kidding. It's a falsetto that's haunting, aching, floaty, STRONG, and it pierces your soul through every pore in your body. To say that this man's voice blew me away would be a huge understatement. When he pairs it with superb lyrics and synth that makes my heart cry with how deep and non-typical it is...well, I didn't even know what to do with myself on my first listen of the album. I was lost in what I was hearing and it was beautiful. Also, the harp. The man plays the freaking harp and he makes it weep tears of joy.

I decided to YTube videos of him singing live and prepeared myself because I knew it just couldn't be as good as the stuff done in the studio. I found a clip of them doing a half hour gig. The music started and then Pat Grossi opened his mouth. And doves flew out. It was that dang perfect. Add to that the concentration and emotion on his face and in the way he moved his body. I couldn't believe it. How does this man not have a following that consists of every person who has ever loved music? There's a lot of care that obviously went into constructing these songs and making them different and unique qhile still being accessible.

I can't wait for more.

I heard these guys on a podcast show and loved what they were doing - it's beautiful music!
If you're looking for something fresh, this is it. There is nothing boring, tired or bland about what Active Child is doing on this album.

YOU ARE ALL I SEE is whispery goodness the whole way through and while M83 fans may particularly be interested, anyone who loves beautiful, ethereal music will find themselves falling in love with this. It is such a lovely album that sometimes there's almost too much loveliness to handle.

Even though I mention M83, there is really no one else's voice I can compare to what gently radiates off of Active Child's album. You could spend your whole time listening to YOU ARE ALL I SEE with your eyes closed and find yourself transported to another world where stress and worry just seep out of your soul.

"Hanging On" is haunting and swirls around your insides while "See Thru Eyes" is vulnerable and loving and very very dreamy with an A-ha 80s sweep to it. "Ivy" would be an awesome song to feature during a magical movie scene where two people first realize how strongly they feel about each other. It will raise the goosebumps on your arms when you hear it each and every time. "Ancient Eye" and "Johnny Belinda" are mystical revelations that may have you checking your feet to see if they are still on the floor.

Every song on here has its own power, but the ones I like most, the ones that really got to me are the ones I mentioned and they are the kinds of things you don't easily forget. YOU ARE ALL I SEE is hard to pin down to one style or sound, but it is as gorgeous as a butterfly or a deer that starts too easily if you approach it too fast. Take your time getting to know this wondrous album.

No love from me for Neon Indian and James Blake is cool in my book, but the sheer dreaminess (as well as actual instrumentation) quotient gets upped by a factor of five in the hands of Pat Grossi aka Active Child. Babies could very well be made to You Are All I See and I wouldn't be a bit surprised. Seriously though, sexy time is in effect with this album of electronica/synth-washed pop, all warm and incandescent with every falsetto choirboy note out of Rossi's mouth and pluck of his harp. Yes, harp. Just when you feel as if things are all angelic and holier than not, "When Your Love Is Safe" and "Playing House," form intimate space and when he declares that he's "in your church tonight"...get a room. And feel free to worship there.
