Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Elizabeth Mitchell goes with what she knows on You Are My Flower. Here a selection of sturdy, old-fashioned songs are delivered with a clear, clipped voice accompanied by a single guitar. The result is an album most parents would make for their own kids if they possessed Mitchell’s talent. Mitchell delivers unsullied renditions of songs from the oeuvres of Woody Guthrie, Elizabeth Cotten, and the Carter Family, and tosses in a version of "Jingle Bells" that would be welcome in June. Pop the CD in and a lovely, simple, peaceful vibe swells inside. --Tammy La Gorce

3.0 out of 5 stars Not my favorite April 7, 2007
Format:Audio CD
I have all of Elizabeth Mitchell's CD's and this one is my least favorite. There are a couple of cute songs on there, but we hardly ever listen to it, b/c my son absolutely loves her other CD's better (Little Bird & You are my Sunshine). If you're deciding which one to get, I'd go with the two above that I mentioned!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great music for kids and their parents November 2, 2005
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is among the tops in the "Music For All Ages" genre. It feels to me like the intended audience is for children (i.e., there is no hidden irony in the lyrics or performances that says, "I know this sounds like a kiddie album, but we grown-ups know that I'm really singing about Woodstock man!"), but the easy sound and sugary innocence in this album makes it irresistable to any music lover at any age. Just simple songs delivered sweetly and simply. Clean acoustic recordings with minimal production. I think that my kids are burned out on this one; I'm not.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent... though short April 19, 2006
By Erik
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
This is a sweet sounding disk, and my 2yo daughter loves it. Everything is pretty much on the slow tip, which makes it a good pre-bedtime listen.

Just two caveats: The bit in the middle ("Rock & Roll) with kids blowing on kazoos and singing gets irritating very fast. And this CD is only 24 minutes long, which is a fine length for a child, but pretty skimpy for a full-priced CD. The whole thing would fit on one side of an LP!

P.S. I wrote this review eight years ago, and I've heard this CD countless times since then without getting sick of it, which is an achievement. It really is a little gem, and I feel bad that I penalized it for being too short, so I've given it more stars now. I don't even mind Rock & Roll anymore.

Some of Elizabeth Mitchell's other discs are good too (especially "You Are My Sunshine"), but this one is still the best.

5.0 out of 5 stars EASY LISTENING September 3, 2005
Format:Audio CD
I received a Dan Zanes CD when my first child was born (HOUSE PARTY). I was looking for more music when I heard Dan Zanes in an interview discussing other musicians. It is he that turned me on to Elizabeth Mitchell. Her voice is incredible and she sings songs that both the young and old can enjoy. I keep all her CDs in my car and listen to them even when my kids aren't with me. Definitely worth getting. This will be listened to for years to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars just right March 26, 2006
By Marty
Format:Audio CD
My kids and I like this album so much-- it's sweet and simple for kids, but also nice to listen to if you are an adult. The songs are (or remind me of) those I learned as a child, and the vocals and arrangments are great.

5.0 out of 5 stars Calming Music for Eating October 7, 2006
Format:Audio CD
My 1yr. old son and I like to listen to this CD during mealtimes. It seems to keep him calm and in his seat. This is one of my favorite children's music CDs. I can tolerate it repeatedly and usually enjoy it very much.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not as good as Elizabeth's You Are My Sunshine cd May 12, 2007
By S. Roth
Format:Audio CD
All the songs are really great, but it's not as entertaining as the Your Are My Sunshine cd. Elizabeth Mitchell has a great voice and makes it easy and fun to listen to kids' music.

5.0 out of 5 stars Why are you still reading? Buy this CD already! April 23, 2004
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
Not that it hasn't been said by the other reviewers who came before me, but this is my (and my son's) favorite music. He (19 months) has been listening to this CD and the "You Are My Sunshine" CD since he joined us in this world. He is entertained and soothed by them, as am I. One of his first words was "cah-cah", to go with his favorite song on one of the two disks. People should really get both disks, not just one. The songs are simple but their choices of instruments and unique arrangements and extremely clever -- and a bit more intricate than you might realize at first listen. I listen to it even when my son is not around, and often hear something new I hadn't before. I also have to say that I feel much better when I'm caught singing something from this CD under my breath at the grocery store rather than "Six Little Ducks That I Once Knew."

This is the kind of kid's album that is a pleasure to listen to as an adult. Mellow and soothing, but never boring or annoying.

3.0 out of 5 stars Early Work
I am a fan of this artist, but this album was an early work made at a friends house. It is not of the same quality as more recent releases. It would have been fine for $7.
