I bought this on a whim, and it's been making regular appearances on my ipod now for a few months. Didn't know what to expect, just had the image in my head of Dhani playing at Concert for George.
This is wonderful, inventive music that is intelligent rock with some tasteful electronica touches. Shelter and Wind Up Dead are favorites, but I really like the whole album. Looking forward to a sophomore effort and hopefully seeing them at Lolla this year. Give this a try... it'll stick with you, it's good music.

I really like this band. Very innovative and very listenable. Percussion is interesting. Diverse use of guitar, even within the same song. Lots of synthesizer. It's moody, acid-y, techno with genuine lyrics. The voice of Dhani Harrison is rich and versatile. Not a bad track on the album.

Fantastic Debut from thenewno2!,

This is a fantastic debut album from thenewno2! The album was originally released on iTunes last August, and has had a few different incarnations, both online and in the SanDisk slotMusic format, but I am extremely happy to finally had a physical CD!
The songs themselves are hard to describe. They are all very different, but mesh nicely into one cohesive album. The album encompasses dream-like ambient songs, rockers and electro-blues songs, and mellow acoustic-y songs, and more. I'm also very happy that the CD also contains the 4 bonus tracks, which have appeared on various other formats of the album at different times. We get People, Life Off, You Gotta Wait, and Jokes on You! I highly recommend this album, as it is one that I have been listening to non-stop since last August. It's an album that is never boring, as each listen brings out something new. Buy it and enjoy!!!

Dhani Harrison's first effort would make his daddy proud. He's off to a good and very promising start. While George's career with The Beatles was over and he had completed his excellent "All Things Must Pass" album at Dhani's age, being 32 now is considered much younger than it used to, so Dhani has time to make a solid solo career for himself. It's in the genes.

Who'da thought?? I mean, it was bound to happen that George's son would follow in his late father's footsteps and become a bonafide musician in his own right, but this release REALLY surprised me. As another reviewer stated, I was only aware of Dhani's musicianship as more of a background figure when I watched the glorious "Concert For George" DVD ... but this album is really one for the books, folks!! Being a bonafide and longtime Beatles fan(atic), I guess it's true that my opinion is pretty biased, but on a generalized scale of overall music-listening, Dhani Harrison has proven himself one talented dude to watch out for! Do yourselves a favor then and BUY THIS!! I don't think you'll be disappointed. Good show indeed, Dhani!! We're proud of ya', mate! :-)

Quite a performance here. Myabe it's me, but I suspect Dhani is a better musician than his father. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree as Harri's son has his old man's knack for unusually constructed melodies and an ear for a new direction in music. Where this falls slightly is that it tends to sound the same after about 40 minutes. There is a single floating on YouTube, "Choose what you're watching", that isn't on here and more's the pity as the CD could use it midway through. That said, Harrison has the chops and creativity and let's hope he gets past the Beatles' kid curse. Zak Starkey established his chops with the Who, Julian and Sean have not really cleared that perception hurdle, and McCartney's kids stick to clothing, photography and working for the firm. Seems the Quiet One has a son ready to make a statement.

I first heard about these guys by searching around Youtube for interesting music late one night, and my search led me to a video called "Choose What You're Watching". I hadn't been this blown away by a tune since first hearing Nirvana, and later Weezer, in the 1990s. True there have been some excellent bands cropping up here and there, but this was the most exciting thing I'd heard in years. I immediately jumped onto I-Tunes and bought everything this band had put out. This is another two-member band featuring a multi instrumentalist and a drummer (such as the White Stripes or the current Smashing Pumpkins) but with a brilliant instrumentalist and a versatile drummer who also brings his own original twist in by balancing acoustic drums with digital programming along with various female guest vocalists who all seem to sound beautiful. Of course I also noticed on the video the eerie (and genetic) resemblance to the late, great George Harrison both in looks and vocal sound, but Dhani Harrison, the multi instrumentalist, guitarist, lead vocalist of this duo certainly has his own style and talent. Oliver Hecks, the drummer, is also one of the best out there, and also is talented in programming sounds. The CD copy is the second version of this I have purchased, but it is well worth it for the improved sound and the extra tracks. I agree with the other poster about one thing. Don't buy this expecting it to sound like John, Paul, George, and Ringo, but if you enjoy the fresh experimentalism and haunting work of Syd, Roger, Nick, and Rick, buy this now. No, the music doesn't sound like early Pink Floyd, (with the exception of "Another John Doe" which is actually quite Floydian) but the adventurous experimentation and hooks are the best since those four musicians did their thing. Buy, and enjoy. This is an excellent debut and I hope there are many more from these guys.

What I love about this album is how the sound is totally different than the popular music nowadays. Dhani's voice is incredible, and I hope they come out with a new album soon!!

I found this bad through youtube and was pleasantly surprised. Then I discovered who the lead singer was, and I was even more impressed by the lack of resting on one's laurels or family name (Harrison, as in George, as in the Beatles,) and instead of playing jangly rock/folk music this album touches on a variety of genres from folk, blues, electronic, and more middle of the road stuff I don't think I could explain. Some songs are straight out rockers (Yomp) others rely more on electronics and sound sort of like a pared down Radiohead (Another John Joe, Give You Love)
The album itself is consistently good, though nothing blows me entirely out of the water...but I appreciate that it is a full album and not a collection of singles. I totally look forward to seeing what they put out in the future

With the release of You Are Here, Dhani Harrison and fellow thenewno2 members (Oliver Hecks, Jonathan Sadoff, Jeremy Faccone, Nick Fyffe and Frank Zummo) give us an album built around an eclectic mix of modern musical genres - part rock, part techno, part electronica, part pop, part psychedelia, part Indian. The result is a unique sound world with lots of texture that holds together. In short, it's a good vibe and sonic ride.
It's surprising the degree to which Dhani has embraced and deploys the new digital musical technologies in a way that his father, who liked to record "real instruments" as he called them, did not. But then again, maybe not, as George liked his effects pedals too. For me personally, it's also an interesting experience to listen to Dhani's voice purely as an instrument. I'm sure that Dhani, like other children of former Beatles like Julian and Sean Lennon, dislike vocal comparisons to their fathers for obvious and understandable reasons. Nevertheless, I must say that as a lifetime Beatles fan, who saw Dhani's father live 4 times and who enjoys singing himself, I found myself really impressed. George's voice was often described as being "thin" or "reedy". There is a similarity, yes - but Dhani's voice has a timbre and a soulfulness that is his alone. As an instrument it grabs your attention and draws you in. There are some great individual songs on this recording - So Vain, Give You Love, Another John Doe, Yomp - but the whole album is impressive and bears repeated listenings. A lot of musical creativity, playfulness and ability is displayed. Dhani's' his own man, following his own path, finding and exploring his own sounds with his friends. The result is in a word - beautiful. It's always great to hear a new artist making beautiful music. After listening to You Are Here, I look forward to the future of thenewno2. |
