Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

"You Are Jaguar is a kind of jazz improvisation, a gutsy mash-up of language poetry and free-verse. In the phrases and repetitions, Bradley and Tomaloff's separate talents emerge, even while building their poetic lairs on shared ground. Inventive. Kinetic. They are poet's poets, both--and their collaboration is a voyeuristic glimpse into the witchcraft of each poets' dark process and a fine read to boot." --Hosho McCreesh, author of For All These Wretched, Beautiful, & Insignificant Things So Uselessly & Carelessly Destroyed...

Firstly, I should point out that I know very little about poetry, and have read very little, so I can only really comment on how much I liked and enjoyed this book, rather than on its poetic merits.

What Ryan W Bradley and David Tomaloff have done here, is almost like a remix project, taking a series of poems and each revising and editing them in their own particular ways, making them their own. Each version of every poem is then presented side by side, so you can read and see the various, sometimes very subtle differences between each take. Tomaloff favours a more angular, fractured formatting and poetic style, whereas Bradley goes with what I imagine in my ignorance, is a more conventional layout and approach. The language is vibrant and jagged, as you may imagine in something titled "YOU ARE JAGUAR", it bites and snarls and tears at you, but sometimes it feels cuddly and warm and you want to invite it into your house and give it a bowl of milk.

I was very, very impressed with this whole book, which works as an entertaining work of poetry and an insight into the working minds of two great poets.

We are the second library in Wisconsin to purchase this work for our collection. The collaboration between two poets is an intriguing symmetry for the collection. The book is a poet's poetry book, but wordcrafters in all genres might be interested in its design, which I won't spoil by describing. Read it!
