Wasn't the worst but far from the best,
By Love me some books "Jounay" (New Orleans, LA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: You Are Not Alone: a Story of Love, Lust and Addiction (Revised) (Paperback)
I bought this book and could not wait to read it. It was a disappointment. It wasn't the worse book that I have read but it was not the best. I am the type of person, once I begin reading a book I don't stop until I am finish. This is the only reason that I completed this book. There were entirely too many typing errors. Ms. Hunter did not do a very good job developing her characters in my opinion. I also feel as though she left you hanging at the end. This book was a little better than 2 stars but not better than three.

I read this book and I did not like it. It appears the author can't speak english cause the grammar is terrible. The story is boring. I do suggest that if you have trouble sleeping at night, read this because it will put you to sleep inside of 1 page.

This review is from: You Are Not Alone: a Story of Love, Lust and Addiction (Revised) (Paperback)
This book is boring and stupid. I skipped numerous pages and still could pick up with the story without feeling like I didn't read some important information. The reason being is because there are a lot of pages that don't list anything important so I skipped it. In other words pages of useless information. I would give this book 2 starts. Some things were ok but I wouldn't ever recommend this book to anyone else who loves a good read such as myself. My sister also attempted to read this book and stopped before she reached page 20. Every one is entitled to their opinion so you decide? But I didn't like it. I found myself rolling my eyes and feeling pressured to finish it. When I did I was more disappointed with the sorry ending just as the entire book. Read "Saved in the City" by Jacquelin Thomas now that is a good book.

Sisters needing Sisters,

This review is from: You Are Not Alone: a Story of Love, Lust and Addiction (Revised) (Paperback)
There comes a time in everyone's life when they need to know someone cares. In Angel Hunter's debut novel, You Are Not Alone, we are given the chance to view the lives and relationships of four special black women. This novel is definitely a winner. Hunter is the founder of The Essence of Self Center, an organization that offers life-enhancing workshops to individuals and groups. This novel is about sisterhood and friendships. Beginning with the cover you can see that this is a good book. Pictured are four beautiful black women who are neither sad nor smiling. Their eyes tell you there's a story to be told. Crystal, Elsie, Susan and Jewell are the key players in Hunter's novel. Laced with love, addiction and lust these four sisters take friendship to a new level. The four women work together in a law firm: Crystal, Elsie, and Susan are attorneys and Jewell is the paralegal. Together, these four women realize they share a common bond. Crystal is stuck in her past and cannot move forward with her life. Elsie wants to have it both ways, she is bisexual, but she wants to have children. Susan is in complete denial about her drug addiction. Jewell is just downright confused, she is dating a white man, but when her son's father reappears the confusion over her feelings for him increases. Even though these women have never discussed their personal business, suddenly Crystal decides to bring them together and this is the story really heats up. Hunter is clear and concise in her writing. The plot is delivered easily in a fast paced entertaining novel. She brings it all together in an ending that makes you want to know more about what happened to the characters. I really enjoyed reading this novel. The hallmark of the novel is the storyline that kept me glued to my seat. Each page is filled with scenes of high emotion and drama. I could not get enough. Ms. Hunter has written an excellent novel about friendship and support between African American women. I plan to buy other books by the author. Reviewed by Dorothy Cooperwood

A "girlfriend-relationship" read!,
By thegritsdotcom "The-Girl-Reading-In-The-South... (Texas, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: You Are Not Alone: a Story of Love, Lust and Addiction (Revised) (Paperback)
This latest "girlfriend-relationship" novel by Angel Hunter, the founder of The Essence of Self Center, focuses on four women who must find self-pride, love, and empowerment to deal with the controversial problems that arise in their lives. The entire cast of players in this novel, though different in temperament and personalities, are linked together by their partnership and work in the same law office. Crystal Gem is an attorney and rape victim. Her involvement with counseling a young rape victim causes painful memories of her own rape to resurface, and leaves her with the realization that until she finds a way to face her rapist, her problems with intimacy and love relationships will continue. Susan Gold is an attorney and high school friend to Crystal. When the love of her life proposes marriage on the condition that she gets help with her cocaine addition, she feels desperate, and letting go of the cocaine is not as easy as she had thought. Elsie Carlson, the third partner in this law firm, is aloof and distant with everyone simply because she does not want them to know that she is in love with a woman. It isn't until she decides to "come out of the closet" about her relationship that she is faced with what this alternative lifestyle really means and brings to her life. Jewell, the paralegal for the firm is a "street-smart" young woman who is successfully balancing work, motherhood, and school at the same time. Even though her son's father has always been the love of her life, she is apprehensive and uncertain about her feelings for Evan, a white man she has been dating and secretly engaged to. The black and white cover of this book is very attractive and definitely the hook that will compel readers to buy it. The simple language and uncomplicated plot makes this book an easy read. I will say that I was expecting the resolutions of each woman's sitaution by the end of the novel to be more compelling with regards to the seriousness of their problems. As I think back to Susan's addiction to cocaine, I am surprised that her painful road to recovery was not explored more. I also felt that Elsie's turmoil with being bisexual was not given enough attention. Still, I commend Ms. Hunter for telling her story and wish her success with her next writing project.

Ignorance to the race,

This review is from: You Are Not Alone: a Story of Love, Lust and Addiction (Revised) (Paperback)
IF you have made the wrong choice of buying this book, then I advise you to put it down, and back away slowly. This book should not, nor ever be read by anyone. It is extremely insulting to my intelligence. Why? Because it wasn't written by an educated person. Everything the people said was predictable and completely cliche. This book should deserve an R rating, for its sexual overtones. We're in America, clean up your act.

Very Entertaining,

I found the book to be a very easy read. It was entertaining and real. I feel Angel did a gtreat job, being that this is her first book, in addition to her publishing it. I was not surprised at the negative reviews. We as "SISTERS" have never really uplifted or supported one another. We always tend to "dig out" the negative instead of just "receiving" the postive. This sister is doing something positive. She is making one of her dreams come true. I feel that she will be a great writter. So those real SISTERS out there continue to support her. Oh, and I personally don't know anyone who would allow their 5th grader to read the book, and as for the English teacher "JUDITH", why don't you give Angel a call and offer some of your expertise for her NEXT BOOK. Why not, for once embrace a NEW YOUNG enthusiastic writter. Give some POSITIVE criticism, in LOVE. It is a book to entertain. It is also real life situations.

There was so many mixed reviews, I had to read this one. I thought that it was a excellent way to portray four, strong, black women. I was not looking for the writer to educate me, so I didn't go into with those thoughts. I wanted to be entertained and Ms. Hunter did that. Congratulations, on your first book. Keep you head up. From one sister to all sisters, it starts and ends with you. This books says exactly what it's called. It lets women know they are not alone.

Ms. Hunter's "You Are Not Alone" is exciting and a page turner. She manages to capture the very different lives of four women with out overloading the reader. Hitting major arteries in todays dating game you are sure to identify with one of the characters. I know which character reflects me. Which one reflects you? Read Ms. Hunter's first novel and find out.
