4.0 out of 5 stars A True Gem... The Hudson Brothers, July 1, 2000

This review is from: So You Are a Star (Audio CD)
How do I even begin. I've been a fan of the Hudson Brothers forever. Have every "album" they've done. And now have been looking to get some of the great songs on CD and this one covers most of them and adds in some rare gems that are not on any of the albums I have.

1. Spinning The Wheel - Upbeat pop with harmony. These guys rock out on this song. Heavy on the guitar and just an all around fun song.
2. So You Are A Star - A Top 100 Hit on Billboard if I'm not mistaken. The song that came out of their television show. Yes they had a television show and I think that is why some never took their music seriously. But just listen to this semi-ballad and you hear Marks great voice and the tightness of the group. This song was destined to be a hit and it still sounds good today.
3. If You Really Need Me - Again just wonderful pop that wasn't really that bubblegum. There was some serious stuff on all their albums.
4. With Somebody Else - Pure hit, this is one of my favorite favorites. I think I've worn out the album playing this track. This was off the Ba-Fa album, a great album produced by Bernie Taupin. Yes of Elton John fame. This album came out under Rocket Records, Elton's record label.
5. Hollywood Situation - This is a song that came out of the television series. Pretty heavy pop, and no it's not bubblegum.
6. Oh Gabriel - This was off the Ba-Fa album and a great piece. The harmony is splendid and this song and this whole album kind of have a very beach..summer feel to it.
7. Do 4 Me - ('95) - A Rarity
8. Annie - Heavy on the piano and fun. This is off the Damn Those Kids album. I this particular album and songs from it you can hear how Mark's voice sounds similar to John Lennon. Mark Hudson has a very versatile voice and should have been recognized more for that fact.
9. Be A Man - A Rarity
10. Out Of The Rainbow / Find Me A Woman / Little Brown Box / One And The Same - This little medley is just pure fun, nonsense, pop rock. Hudson brothers having a good time on this one. This is from the Totally Out of Control album... G - O - D spells God ... D - 0 - G spells dog...OH lord they must be One and the Same.*L* Just line from this medley.
11. Rendezvous - The Hudson Brothers at their VERY best. This hit Billboards hot 100 and showed that they had a wonderful knack for pure ear candy. This is from the Ba-Fa album and it sounds like something you'd hear from the Beach Boys in their Good Vibration days...but even better. Love this song!
12. Pretty Baby - A Rarity
13. Cry, Cry, Cry - Shows the brothers doing a great ballad with lush harmonies.
14. Afraid To Love - This is from Damn Those Kids and is a duet with Linda Ronstadt. Good rock-pop song. Should have been a hit.
15. Sweet Candy - ('95) A Rarity
16. Straight Up And Tall - From Totally out of Control if I'm not mistaken. Through all these songs you will see the major influence the Beatles had on these guys.
17. Joni - A heartfelt ballad by Mark on Damn Those Kids. This one is ok, not exactly one of my favorites though.
18. Mr. Kirby (The New Yorkers) - A Rarity
19. Lonely School Year - From Ba-Fa, this hit the Billboard top 100 and is another great pop song. Just listening to it makes you think of summer. This one and all the songs from Ba-Fa are like that and this cd pulls a lot of them from that hardly heard of album.
20. Bernie Was A Friend Of Ours / My Heart Can't Take It - Yet another from Ba-Fa. There is a small part in Bernie was a friend of ours that is perfectly Beach Boys. These guys amazed me even more on that little snippet. "Don't let the california sun go down on you..." Most of the song is an ode to Bernie Taupin. But this little part of it is somethign that always sticks out in my head. And then the ending piece..My Heart Can't take it... wonderful piece.

If you ever wanted to hear one of the best hardly noticed pop bands of the 70's that really could write great music and play their instruments. Buy this CD, you won't be disappointed, you will wonder why you didn't hear these guys sooner.

And to Bill, Mark, and Brett Hudson...if you happen to read this. *smile* Thank you so very, very much for some great music. To this day some of your songs still underscore my life. I'd like to see you guys back together. Take care!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Hudson Brothers, "So You Are A Star", the best, April 13, 2001

The first question that comes to mind after listening to this CD is, why weren't they more popular??! The Hudson Brothers have an amazing harmony and sound that enhances some of the best songs I have ever heard! As talented as these brothers are, they still are widely unknown and that is a great loss to the music world.

Although most of these songs were recorded years ago, the sound is timeless and would do well even in today's market. I highly recommend this CD to anyone with an ear for music, its money well spent!

This CD brought back wonderful memories of growing up and watching The Hudson Brothers TV show. One can only hope that now that this collection has been released, the brothers might see fit to reissue all their original LPs on CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT MUSIC by THE HUDSON BROTHERS, February 3, 2003

Besides my partiality to anything they did (or have done), this CD REALLY is exceptionally good. I would have loved one of those big double CD's but this is just as cool.
For the die hard fans, it's a great walk down memory lane and for the new folk who have just dicovered them for some weird reason online, I'm sure they will like it and it is a great introduction to their music.
AND YES they DID write all their own stuff and play their own instruments so to the critics who never game them a chance...Well let's just say I have two words for em and they ain't Happy Birthday!
That's mah guys! They haven't let me down yet! THANK YOU!

5.0 out of 5 stars Situation Lost, May 8, 2005

The Hudson's had the last true musical, variety show on American T.V. I have spent the past two decades getting as many snippets about their careers as I could. I am very excited that Mark has found success as a record producer. I would love to hear more of HIS music. Any re-mastered CD's and DVD's from their shows would be a big addition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hudson Brothers RAWK!, February 4, 2005

This review is from: So You Are a Star (Audio CD)
I started listening to the Hudson Brothers at about age 7 or so. I had my room wallpapered with their posters (until my sister...10 years older...decided they looked better with Bandito moustaches). Anyway. I have MOST of their other albums, and I wish that they would be RE-RELEASED on CD, since not all the songs are available on THIS CD! My favorite albums were Hollywood Situation, Totally Out of Control, and Ba-Fa. Come on Hudson Brothers...you have to get an online plea going to get these items to your long-lost fans! I can't be the ONLY person that liked your music and watched your (night-time AND Saturday) TV shows! You guys deserved way more credit than you ever got regarding writing and performing popular music in the 70's (and beyond). Very talented.

5.0 out of 5 stars So You Are A Star the best of the Hudson Brothers, April 25, 2002
This review is from: So You Are a Star (Audio CD)
Although I enjoyed their Saturday morning show in
the '70's, I am disppointed that these guys did not
get more respect as recording artists. They are very
enjoyable. They have a catchy pop sound. Most songs on
this album are really good. I would like to have each
individual album on CD. Especially Ba-Fa and Totally
Out Of Control. Many songs on this best of came from
those albums. But, there are other entries too.
The Hudson Brothers are one group who truly deserve
recognition by the music-loving public.
This album is a wonderful walk down memory for some,
like me. For others a pleasant revelation of the
talent of this trio.
Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Actress Kate Hudson's Dad, April 3, 2004

This review is from: So You Are a Star (Audio CD)
Critically acclaimed pop-rock group with tremendous musical talent and produced some of the most melodic rock influenced by the Beach Boys/Beatles/60's Pop-Rock, yet, brilliantly displayed and maintained an identity all their own. MARK, BILL & BRETT created great music! [Bill Hudson...I think it was him...fathered Goldie Hawn's two children - now adults - and Kate is a critically acclaimed actress on her own. I believe Goldie & Bill were married at one time.] The Hudson Brothers were a great pop-rock band that never achieved the commercial success they so much deserved. They were incredible! "So You Are A Star" & "Rendezvous" were huge Top 40 hits in the mid-70's. And of course, their Saturday Morning show RAZZLE DAZZLE was a huge hit as well!

5.0 out of 5 stars Old Time Fan, October 12, 2007
This review is from: So You Are a Star (Audio CD)
I have been a fan of the guys since summer of '74, and I was excited to see some of their stuff on cd. I own it and love it. A must for any Hudson fan. Like everyone else, I wish the guys would reissue their music on cd. I'd be first on line to buy. But I hope this time, it's easily accessible. I had to order this from the record label's website after some research around '98-'99

5.0 out of 5 stars Lets hear it for the Boys!, July 3, 2008
This review is from: So You Are a Star (Audio CD)
I have been a Hudson fan for years - and was probably one of the first people to buy this cd. I used to think I was their only fan !!

For the most part this is a really good cd- but 2 songs I thought they should have added
DOLLY DAY and Sunday Driver from Totally out of Control.

I think that the Hudson's were one of the best bands to come out of the 70's and I can not understand how the Bsy City Rollers got so popular jut by spelling Saturday Night -and here the Hudsons were with Rendezvous - Apple Pie Hero and scores of others and FM radio bans them ????????? What about Help Wanted or Runaway from The Truth About Us?????
I could get up on a soap box about this -
If your an old fan or a new fan you will enjoy this compilation - and if you ever get a chance get your hands on Totally out of Control or Ba Fa.
There's not a bad cut on either one. These songs just take you back to a simpler time and something about these guys just make you feel good .
