1.0 out of 5 stars Should be Categorized Under Christian Self-Help
The self-help ideas were basic, and I tried to get past 30 percent of the book read on Kindle, but couldn't. Preach, preach, preach. It just turned me off with the religious content.

Dr. Stoop combines teachings from the Bible with psychology to demonstrate how principles of good mental health can enable a person to create a better life. This book gets to the practical application of these principles. It literally tells you what to do to put them into practice. Readers are taught how to change self-defeating thoughts into thoughts leading to positive behaviors.
Even people who are already familiar with the value of positive self-talk can reap the benefits of this book by being reminded of the power of this potential which is available to everyone.
He gives examples of how it has worked successfully in the lives of various people from differenct backgrounds.
Unlike a lot of other books in this genre, he devotes a chapter to the abuse of positive self-talk by putting it into a broader context than most authors. Stoop addresses the issue of the sovereignty of God in the matter of faith and positive confession. He goes on to point out that self-talk isn't something we create, it already is going on, the issue is learning how to use this reality to one's advantage.

4.0 out of 5 stars Be Transformed Daily Through the Renewing of Your Mind!, October 18, 2005
This review is from: You Are What You Think (Mass Market Paperback)
I actually picked this book up at a local drug store. I had all these products in my basket to enhance the outer me. I figured I'd add something to my shopping experience that would hopefully enhance the inner me, and did it! This is a great book if you are in need of an attitude adjustment especially if you are in a situation where the pain of staying the same is greater than the pain of changing. After reading this book I realized that there is "nothing new under the sun" and that God has been suggesting faith, obedience and "cognitive behavior therapy" as part of the strategic plan of becoming a better you for centuries. The author takes a God-help/self-help approach and uses practical cognitive behavior theories in conjunction with scripture to help the reader achieve spiritual and psychological insight. Once again, great book but it only works if you are willing to have the faith and are willing to do the work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Practical - Easy to Follow - Read it when things aren't going well, July 6, 2007

This review is from: You Are What You Think (Mass Market Paperback)
This is the most practical book on controlling thoughts I've ever read.

Being made over again in His image requires active participation in controlling our thoughts or as Paul says "...taking every thought captive..."

This is the best practical book out there on how to get more control of thoughts and take them captive. Buy it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dee Lundgren, counselor in Bucks County PA, December 3, 2010
This review is from: You Are What You Think (Mass Market Paperback)
I loved this book. What you think is the single most important influence on a person's happiness and sense of well being. This is a practical book that teaches a person to use self talk to actually shape your emotions. Usually a person is not aware of their own self talk but this book will get you thinking about what you frequently say to yourself and its effect on you. Most importantly you will learn how to change these patterns and as a result make postive changes in your life. Get this book.

For those with a lot of "head trash", the practice of replacing negative self talk with affirmation-type messages is life changing. This is not just a theory book, it is a primer on helping yourself that could benefit just about anyone.

I think for people who are looking into themselves as to understand who we are and why, this is a great book.

In spite of having a lot of Biblical comments (which I personally think don't add much to the book and perhaps distract you a bit) I think the author designed a great flow and takes to discover in your own soul and mind.

One advice. You should read 2 or 3 times the "your self-talk- Chapter" since this is a fundamental theoretical basis for the rest of the book.

This is the kind of books that will make you think a lot about your habits, your "problems" and questions how real things are, and to what extent we "invent" or even "look" for problems, illnesses, etc. in order to "fulfill" expected roles or unconscious mind programming.

I'd suggest that after reading this book you could browse an enneagram book, because what you say to yourself will be strongly related with your enneatype.

I loved it and strongly recommend it!!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Yet another christian evangelical book with a neutralself help title, December 23, 2011
This book is a christian sermon, not a neutral self help book. At least it does not masquerade too much, beside the neutral title and the classification under self help instead of religion. In the first pages there are references to the apostles, the Lord, and God sitting in the backseat if our lives. I am very tired of these religious monologues being marketed as "self help".

2.0 out of 5 stars better books out there..., November 26, 2011
This review is from: You Are What You Think (Mass Market Paperback)
With all due respect to the author, I did not enjoy this book. Perhaps some people may benefit from it, but I suggest looking for other ones on this topic. To me, it has the feel of being old. Many of the Scripture references are from The Living Bible (as well as the Phillips translation and KJV) which was updated to the New Living Translation in 1996. I haven't read extensively on the mind and thoughts, but a step up (in my opinion) would be Norman Wright's "A Better Way to Think."
