YOU: Being More Effective in Your MBTI. Type is the only research-based leadership development book built around the 16 personality types measured by the Myers Briggs Type Indicator instrument, and the 20 facets underlying those types MBTI Step I. It is a book of development tools and tips designed to help you be more effective personally and professionally through greater understanding of personality types.

The book is for: People who want to grow, enhance their skills, and have better work and non-work relationships. HR professionals who want to be able to relate personality style to skills and effectiveness. Experienced MBTI instrument users (executive coaches, organization development consultants, training and development professionals) who want to directly relate type preference to increasing competence at work. Packed with detailed points and impressive book.

I'm a big fan of the MBTI and have gone so far as to be certified by CAPT to administer and interpret the assessment. I use it for personal development and to coach writing students in the ways their preferences can be harnessed to enhance the creative process.

I also use the MBTI in my work as a screenwriter. In my screenwriting class at UCLA Extension, I introduce it as a tool with great relevance for the dramatic writer to deepen character work, and to delve deeper into characters who may be very unlike the writer.

So... I'm pretty familiar with the MBTI and find it very useful. I was excited to hear about this book and eagerly plunked down a sizable chunk of change to purchase it.

Buyer be warned. This book has an extremely strong focus on developing a person within a workplace, and more specifically a large, corporate workplace. It's all about team work with co-workers, developing effective communication skills with a work purpose in mind, and becoming a better workplace leader and team player, handling meetings with superiors and subordinates, conflict, goal setting, fitting in, etc.

Nothing wrong with all that. It's just that its focus is narrow, and even the books that it recommends for each type to improve their weaknesses again retain that business focus.

I was sadly disappointed in this. My belief is that the MBTI has wide application, and while books cannot be all things to all people, the title of this book was misleading. It needs a subtitle. For example: YOU...in the corporate workplace. Being More Effective in your MBTI Type as you climb the ladder. That would be a more accurate assessment of what you're getting.

You is a wonderful resource I count on for the coaching work that I do. It helps my coachee and I understand how type preferences impact his or her working style, natural strengths and possible blind spots with specific, clear suggestions for ways to develop. I also have found You great for understanding relationships and how my coachee might better manage conflicts and communicate more effectively. Amazing so many helpful suggestions come in one book! I have a lot of books about psychological type and find this is the one I return to for practical tips for my coaching work.

This is an excellent reference book, to better understand yourself, your family members and people you work with. We all have our strengths, blind spots and preferences. We each perceive our worlds differently and therefore we may behave differently in similar situations. This book validates all of us and give us insights to better understand ourselves and other people with whom we live, work and interact. Wish I had this resource twenty years ago. I would have been a more respectful person and effective manager.

YOU is an essential resource to be kept in easy reach for those of us looking for ways to work and relate more effectively with others. I have many MBTI Type books on my shelf and use them often. YOU has become my first choice for a quick Type refresher as well as practical keys to the complexities of personal development. I have confidence in YOU based on superior expertise of the authors, their commitment to research based conclusions and advice, as well as 20 years personal experience using MBTI -- everyday proof of value towards creating better relationships and tapping full potential personally. Top marks!

I think the You is just and opinion. I do not believe that it a book that I would have chosen for students to use because it is discouraging and insulting
