This superb collection consists of songs recorded from the mid-eighties to the mid-nineties, and like fine wine, Engelbert sounding better than ever; his voice is a little deeper but not diminished in luster or range, with interpretations of some classic songs brimming over with soulful emotion.
There are three less familiar songs from Eng's '96 "After Dark" CD (tracks # 5, # 10, # 17), five that come from his collaboration with arranger/conductor Bebu Silvetti in the lush, spectacular '95 CD "Love Unchained" (tracks # 1, # 12, # 13, # 15 & # 16), and the rest of the nine tracks can be found in the mellow, jazzy "Collector's Edition" 2 CD set (also released as "An Evening With..."). Favorites include "Unchained Melody", with the final section taken in a high, full voice...with seemingly endless breath control...that is thrilling, the incredibly gentle "The Very Thought of You", the glorious melody of "Love is a Many Splendored Thing", and the country-flavored "There's No Song Like a Slow Song". One can never have too much of Englebert, and this is another compilation of gorgeous music, sung to perfection, and is a little different because it does not contain any of the songs that made him a household name in the '60s and '70s. The liner notes give the recording history of the songs, as to who originally performed them (5 were hits for Bing Crosby, 3 for Nat King Cole, etc) but no info on the Engelbert recordings. The sound is good and total playing time is 60'30.

I keep collecting and revisiting Engelbert CD's because these days real singing talent is hard to find. So many are maufactured in a studio with technology and unfortunatley great singers are fading away into our past. Engelbert is a master vocalist and a combination of smooth tone nuances and his powerful range makes him one of the best song enterpreters in the world. He is perhaps too romantic for most guys to listen to but i promise you if you give him an honest listen you will be impressed by his vocal abilities and powerful range, as a singer myself i know what he accomplishes vocally is simply amazing. This CD is one of his better ones. He has several cuts from that magical gathering between he and Babe Salvetti Orchestra (the Love Unchanied CD and the Engelebert Live DVD)which is some of his best work, if not his best work ever.
On this CD he leans strongly to big band or standards/classics era songs with a few modern ones thrown in. I really liked No Song like a Slow Song and Love me like we'll Never Love Again. Overall only Engelbert can do these songs jutsice with his special touch and like the songs he sings his talent is also timeless.

If you enjoyed the sweet, romantic music of the fifties and sixties, you will appreciate this collection by Engelbert Humperdink. It's amazing that my copy is not worn out - it has had so much play and is always good for my soul.
