Editorial Reviews

2013 release from the ethereal Alt-Rock band. Recorded in Nashville, You Belong Here features ten original songs (three of which were featured on the 2011 EP) and was engineered by Vance Powell (Jack White, Raconteurs, the Dead Weather) and co-produced by the band and Grammy-nominated Paul Moak (Mat Kearney, Martha Wainwright, the Weeks). of the record, the band comments, 'The whole spirit of You Below Here really resonates with us. It's a phrase that gets tossed around without much thought, but if you take a moment and think about it, it can hold a lot of comfort and depth. Like walking into a party and everyone is genuinely glad you are there. It's the celebration of togetherness, really.'

This record has a couple/three really good hooky singles... then a few really satisfying tracks that grow on you and expose the depth of this effort. Super strong, rad album. RAD...

Wow. I don't remember the last time I was blown away by an LP. I can't believe this bunch works out of Nashville because their music has this wicked 70s New York street rock vibe. It's a shame this hasn't received wider press because every track is solid, and these guys know catchy hooks--the interplay between the bass and the electric guitars is incendiary, a chemistry that you can hold in your hand. Special thanks to Ms. Taylor Schilling and the cast and crew of Netflix's ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK: "Walking Backwards" (the best song on the album) was used to perfect effect in an episode of the series. Thanks to them for exposing me to this American Jewel of an LP. Every time I hear that song I can see Taylor Schilling strutting down the corridor, a woman who's gonna have her way...those who've seen it, you know what I'm talking about. ;)

Usually music that is this catchy and fun has shallow or stupid lyrics, but as my urge to break out in a dance at my office chair builds, I also find myself pulled in by some very meaningful lyrics. All around great music...

Every song on this album is great, full stop. Ten great songs. Most really successful bands would have a tough time filling a "best of" album with ten songs as good as these. Deserved a rave review on Pitchfork, and is so much better than most stuff that site raves about. Buy it.

My wife heard Leagues perform on NPR while she was driving home one day and actually stayed in her car in the garage to hear the end of a song. She came upstairs and told me to turn on the NPR stream on the PC so we could both listen. I was immediately impressed: they sound like a mix of Vacationer and Vampire Weekend to me, upbeat and catchy. All the songs we heard were toe-tappers, so we checked the whole album out on Spotify. Some might think the album is a little one-beat (the tempo doesn't vary much, all the songs are in the same vein of upbeat indie rock), but it's perfect for my tastes and, apparently, my wife's tastes too.

We all have music that others just don’t get. Bands we love that even our most-trusted friends can’t stand.

Not so with Leagues.

In an age when over-production and marketing are moving music from art that is created to a product that is manufactured, “You Belong Here” stands out as an album full of material that was created to be enjoyed instead of consumed.
