Grade 3-5-To be a meteorologist, just like Perez of the Weather Channel, all readers need to do is be curious, persistent, and work hard. That is the basic message of this light work, which offers children some general vocational guidance. It focuses on the path of one meteorologist who began her career in the military, and it does not discuss alternative routes to success. The writing in places is awkward, causing the personal reactions and insights to lack credibility. The childlike color illustrations are not well done, and several are difficult to comprehend. The most useful page is about the American Meteorological Society, which includes addresses for several interesting and informative Web sites. Unless you have a specific need for materials on careers in science for girls, Mark Breen and Kathleen Friestad's The Kids' Book of Weather Forecasting (Williamson, 2000), which provides simple activities to get children excited about weather, is a better choice.
