4.0 out of 5 stars The Bach piece by the grave
Both the movie and the soundtrack are fantastic. I do wish the Bach peices were speckled in throughout the soundtrack, but it is wonderful nonetheless. In response to Jack Fu's question regarding the Bach piece by the grave, it is from St. Matthews Passion, and is called "Aus Liebe will mein Heiland sterben." If you look to purchase it, and are looking for the...

3.0 out of 5 stars More on Bach
For those interested, the Cello played throughout the score is from Bach's Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello, probably played by Yo Yo Ma. Get a recording here on Amazon by searching for Bach: Six Unaccompanied Cello Suites / Yo-Yo Ma

Enjoy!

3.0 out of 5 stars Yes, the cello is missing, February 18, 2001

The cello piece is the prelude from Bach's Cello Suite No. 1 in G-major. EMI has a great recording of all 6 suites played by Mstislav Rostropovich. He titles the first suite "Lightness". It's wonderful.

In response to Jack Fu's question regarding the Bach piece by the grave, it is from St. Matthews Passion, and is called "Aus Liebe will mein Heiland sterben." If you look to purchase it, and are looking for the sound achieved in the film, be careful to seek a version sung by a boy soprano (versus a woman). A CD entitled "Voices of Angels" is a good start.

The Bach Piece is Suite 1, S 1007 in G major, the prelude -- also likely the same version used in "Master and Commander". "You can count on Me" is one of my favorite movies. Both Mark Ruffalo and Laura Linney are two of America's best actors. Laura Linney is prettier.

3.0 out of 5 stars I wish, I wish, August 23, 2005

The cellist who played the Bach in the movie, is Roman Borys, a top Canadian cellist. His interpretation of the 1st Suite is so gentle and melancholy that I rated this recording down because it isn't included on the CD. What a shame!

After I saw this movie I went out to buy Bach: The Cello Suites Inspired By Bach, From The Six-Part Film Series / Yo-Yo Ma
only to discover it is NOT the exact rendition that was played during the film (still a great CD nevertheless). Now I'm 99% sure that the version played in the CD is actually from the CD Johann Sebastian Bach: Cello Suites 1-6 [Mstislav Rostropovich]

5.0 out of 5 stars The Bach Question, April 13, 2003

It's a shame they don't list who performed the Bach in the movie. If you're missing the Bach on this CD, I highly recommend the Bach Cello suites performed by Edgar Meyer. The album is called Bach: Unaccompanied Cello Suites, Nos. 1, 2, and 5, and on it, Edgar Meyer transcribes the Cello pieces for the double bass. It is a stunning achievement (and if you're looking for the sound from You Can Count on Me--I think this is the album for you). The suites, because they have to be performed on the cumbersome bass, are slower and more languid. Also of interest is the album Appalachia Waltz performed by Edgar Meyer, Yo-Yo Ma, and Mark O'Connor. Although I'm quite sure none of these pieces were featured in the film You Can Count on Me, they sound as if they could have been.

3.0 out of 5 stars incomplete soundtrack, August 20, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: You Can Count on Me (Audio CD)
Apparently the complete soundtrack from the movie is missing several key songs, including 3 vocals by the incomparable Loretta Lynn, and this Bach:
"Aus Liebe will Meine Heiland sterben!" from St. Matthew Passion; Performed by Reinische Kantorei Das Kleine Kozart; Deutsche Grammaphon Gesellschaft GmbH., Hamburg

3.0 out of 5 stars question about the Bach, March 9, 2001

Can anyone tell me whose rendition of the cello piece resembles the one used in the movie? I bought one recording and it was beautiful, but played in an upbeat tempo which entirely changed the feel of the piece. I don't know how to tell which performer's recording of it might be nice and slow, like in the movie. Thanks.......

4.0 out of 5 stars Great but missing a critical piece..., January 9, 2001
This review is from: You Can Count on Me (Audio CD)
The movie is excellent and the music on the soundtrack is a nice complement to a touching and funny story, but where is the beautiful score with the haunting cello?? It is a shame that it was left out.
