OK, so disco is dead. Who cares? I bought this video because I am fat, fifty-two and have as much rhythm as a truckload of pots and pans bouncing down a rocky slope. I needed something to teach me just to move!

3.0 out of 5 stars This was not the nightclub dancing I had expected
This video has introductory disco and slow dancing. If one is looking for beginning non-contact disco dancing, you will probably find this video helpful. The second part of the video features contact slow dancing. The instructors Vicki Regan and Ron De Vito are very capable, leading the viewers step by step. 5.0 out of 5 stars Best for Beginners, December 30, 2001

OK, so disco is dead. Who cares? I bought this video because I am fat, fifty-two and have as much rhythm as a truckload of pots and pans bouncing down a rocky slope. I needed something to teach me just to move!

This video starts with just flexing your knees in rhythm. The most complicated step is stepping from side to side to a beat. Dancers with any experience at all will want to move on to a different dance video. Buy this one if you want a little gentle exercise while learning to move your body in time.

After practicing the moves here, you could probably dance in an emergency and come off looking halfway decent. More importantly, this video will get you ready for your second dance or exercise video. Enjoy.

Leslie

This video has introductory disco and slow dancing. If one is looking for beginning non-contact disco dancing, you will probably find this video helpful. The second part of the video features contact slow dancing. The instructors Vicki Regan and Ron De Vito are very capable, leading the viewers step by step. However, because there was no prior reviews of this video, I assumed too much and had thought the video would feature something like the disco hustle, a contact dance, and a slow dance such as the nightclub two step a la Buddy Schwimmer. As they say, buyer beware.

4.0 out of 5 stars What You Wanted to Know About Disco, but Were Afraid to Ask, January 31, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: You Can Dance Nightclub - Rock/Disco & Slow Dancing [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This tape was just what I was looking for. Whenever I've gotten on the dance floor, I've always winged it. I knew there were some very simple disco steps, but no one was ever able to show me what they were. This tape clued me in on how to do them instantly. The instructors made the dance routines so easy I picked them up in minutes, (and I was previously rhythmically-challenged). Now I feel like I'm ready to move on to the tough stuff. It's a great tape for beginners and people like me, who should have begun a long time ago!

5.0 out of 5 stars I can dance!, February 19, 2004

If you cannot dance at all, this video will teach you how to at least hold your own on the dance floor. I had always avoided dancing at all costs. Up until recently, I would only go to bars that didn't have dance floors. I would even make excuses to my girlfriend to get out of dancing when we'd go out.

I finally decided to do something about it after a friend made fun of me recently. I've asked family members and friends to teach me how to dance, but nobody was able to teach me the fundamental rule that this video does: All you do is move your feet to the beat, and everything else will follow. I had always tried too hard to move my upper body to the beat. That's not the idea at all!

Some of the video was not helpful. Nobody does the forward-and-back type dancing. Some of the side-to-side stuff was not too useful, but the basic 'step left-step right', to the beat, was quite helpful indeed. Get that basic step down and you'll find yourself doing your own variations of it on the dance floor. Skip the double step...you probably won't even find room for that in most clubs.

If you can look past the occasional corniness of the video, you can really pick up some useful tips and can learn to dance in minutes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Getting you Started, August 5, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: You Can Dance Nightclub - Rock/Disco & Slow Dancing [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I was delighted with the tape. It is the only "free-style" dancing instruction tape I've seen. This tape explained the steps very clearly and I think the dancers looked great. You can adapt the steps and arm movements to reflect your style.

Maybe it's too basic for an experienced dancer, but for me, who would rather sit a dance out than to risk being ridiculed, it was exactly what I needed. We don't have NYC style dance clubs so most of the dancing is at weddings or parties.

Nice video. Easy to follow instructions. You'll learn the basic steps pronto! Although the dance styles taught may be a bit outdated. I guess a little bit of knowledge never hurts. Just don't "get down wittit" at any hip trendy nightclub - that'll be embarrassing!.

1.0 out of 5 stars Does NOT teach 70's disco dancing at all!, December 31, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: You Can Dance Nightclub - Rock/Disco & Slow Dancing [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This item was completely misrepresented by the manufacturer as an item that provides instruction on "disco" dancing; however, the only dancing on this tape is 80's and early 90's dancing which is completely hideous. It pains me to even watch this tape because the dancing is so awful. The appropriate title for this video should be "Dancing for Old Farts on Cruise Ships." If you're of young age, I would not suggest getting this tape. It is so awful!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beginner's Dream, August 7, 2000

As a 49-year-old widow of a non-dancing husband, I thought I'd never decipher the mystery of how others can move so easily to music, with no apparent step routine. This tape guides those of us for whom this movement doesn't come naturally, and it's so incredibly simple! There ARE steps you can follow, and you WILL feel natural doing them. I'm looking forward to trying out what I've learned with a dance partner some day.

4.0 out of 5 stars Please take with a grain of salt, February 9, 2007

(REAL NAME)
I read a ton of reviews prior to getting this video, many of the people were disappointed cause it seemed too simple, too basic, and or too dated. While I am not the best dancer in the world, I have always aspired to be, and this video(DVD) is strictly for beginners or those who don't know how to dance at all, or would like to do so. I have taken ballroom dancing at the YMCA, but you cannot use that kind of dance at your typical nightclub, or company party. If you want the basics of modern freestyle dance(nightclub, weddings, etc) broken down into a simple easy to follow steps this DVD is a good choice. While the music is too canned, and the teachers come across as plastic since they clearly aren't actors, they do a good job of letting someone get the basics of freestyle dance in the comfort of their own home, and at their own pace. This is not a DVD for kids, nor teens, but for in my opinion, older adults who want to learn a new skill, and have some fun instead of being a perpetual wallflower. Like with any skill dance is all about practice, and your confidence will improve, and you can relax, and not be so afraid of looking awkward if you at least get the basics down, and this DVD definitely can help.

I laughed a little bit when I first watched this video, but once I got into it, it became really fun! I even got my boyfriend to imitate the artistic moves that the man in the video was doing. We both had a lot of fun learning all of these night club dance moves, and we even got to try them out at my sister's wedding. I think people were surprised at how much we knew! It's definitely great for dancing at weddings.
