About the Author

More than 120 million readers have found comfort in the writings of Max Lucado. He ministers at the Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas, where he lives with his wife, Denalyn, and a sweet but misbehaving mutt, Andy.

More About the Author

In just under two decades of writing, Max Lucado has accomplished more than most writers hope for in a lifetime. Most of his books have appeared on one or more best seller lists, including those published by the "New York Times," "USA Today," "Publishers Weekly," and the Christian Booksellers Association (CBA). Aside from hardcover books, Lucado's writings have also been published as children's books, videos, CD-ROMs, DVDs, music CDs, mass paperback booklets, apparel, giftware, bookmarks, calendars, study Bibles, workbooks, curricula, and plush products. In spring 2003, Hallmark/Dayspring Cards launched a new gift card line featuring excerpts from Lucado's writings--and has already sold more than one million cards.

All this success has drawn more than a little attention to a previously low-profile Texas author and minister. Lucado has been featured in a wide range of media, including "USA Today," "Larry King Live," and "NBC Nightly News." He has spoken at the National Prayer Breakfast before the President of the United States. He has traveled with internationally renowned musicians as a special speaker on their music tours, such as the highly successful "Come Together & Worship Tour" (sponsored by Chevrolet) with Grammy Award-winning artists Michael W. Smith and Third Day.

Journey to the Top
Lucado was born in 1955 in San Angelo, Texas, and raised in Andrews, Texas, the youngest of four children. His father was an Exxon oil field mechanic who, Lucado remembers, always smelled of grease cleaner. "It makes it easy for me to see a God who is loving and kind--because my dad was," he says. His mother was a nurse who grew up working in the cotton fields.

Lucado went through a period of rebellion against his parents' values and their God during his teens and into college. But it wasn't long before he found himself drawn back to his roots, back to God. He married, spent time serving as a missionary in Brazil, and returned to the States, where he began working as a church minister and writing on the side.

Secret to Success
From all accounts, Max Lucado is not a man consumed by sales, awards, and achievements. He often turns down media interviews since they impede on family and ministry commitments. He spends the bulk of his week serving as senior minister at Oak Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas. And he is truly surprised by his own success--more impressed by his one-in-a-million wife and three amazing daughters than by his successful writing career.

Customer Reviews

This book was very easy to read.
Jennifer
He gives each of us unique talents and skills that allow us to shine--with the desire that we will reflect God's love as we live up to his gifts.
Something Graphic
The title really hit on my favorite point of the book that I cannot be anything I want to be, but I can be everything that God wants me to be.

You can't shake your unhappiness at work.

You feel like a square peg in a round hole.

You love people, but you are stuck behind a cube every day.

You feel bored and unhappy.

You were created for a purpose, but not just any purpose-A special, divine purpose. Understanding that purpose and knowing how to go after it is the message of this book.

Although this book targets young adults, I found the message of this book to be motivating and inspiring. It helped me to view my job as a homeschooling mother of 3 children not just as a job, but as a role created specifically for me. It challenged me to think through many of my strengths and understand why certain areas are harder for me. It also was helpful in viewing the strengths and weaknesses of my children.

Max Lucado has a wonderful way of keeping your attention with powerful stories about other people and biblical truths that speak right to your heart. This small "gift sized" book was packed with truths and thought-provoking statements about how God made us, uses us, and wants us to find our "sweet spot" so we can serve Him better.

This book is a short read (127 pages), which was kind of disappointing. I had hoped for maybe some kind of a checklist to assess your skills at the end, but there was none. However, Lucado gave me something to think about and for that he gets my approval. This book would make a great gift, as the cover mentions, for the Graduate. It is hardbound and the picture on the front is a great one for this book. I think if you read this book, you will find yourself thinking about your divine purpose in a new light. It's never too late to seek your purpose in life or think about where God wants you.

"You Can Be Everything God Wants You To Be" by Max Lucado is a great gift-book for the graduate in your life (it even says so on the cover). It is composed of selections from Lucado's book, "Cure For The Common Life." If you're going to get just one of these books, I'd recommend, "Cure For The Common Life," as you get a more in-depth look at living in your "sweet spot." However, if you're gifting it to someone younger or someone with less of an attention span for books, "Everything" is the way to go.

"Everything" is an easy read, as is all of Lucado's work that I've read. It's premise is that God has given you a sweet spot in which to live- a place where your passions meet the aptitudes which God has given you. Lucado encourages you to probe your uniqueness in order to find what God has for you to do. He recommends that you take a look at the metaphorical suitcase which He packed for your trip into this world. What talents, preferences, strengths, etc. are in your suitcase? That's the key to finding your sweet spot.

I recommend this book. It's not a mind-blower, but it's a good thought-provoker, especially for those who don't feel they're in their sweet spot, or those in a time of transition, like the graduate.

Max Lucado writes in a style all his own, and I enjoy the way he personalizes the topic he is writing about to our own lives. The title of this book summarizes it well - you can be everything God wants you to be. Not as the world says, that, "you can be anything you want to be," because in all honesty, that isn't really true. Max writes, "Our Maker gives assignments to people, 'to each according to each one's unique ability'" (Matt. 25:15). He goes on to say, "God endows us with gifts so we can make Him know. Period." He quotes 1 Corinthians 13:7 "Each person is given something to do that shows who God is." (MSG)

This book is promoted as a good gift book for graduates, and this is true, but as a 50-something grandmother, I was encouraged by the Biblical perspective for us each to be the person God created us to be, no matter our age or vocation. Max encourages us to take a good look at where we are in life and what we are doing with a perspective of contentment, not for money or accolades.

It is a short book and an easy read, and I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to encourage others in their walk of the life created for them by God. They will not be disappointed.

Thanks to Booksneeze, another amazing book has graced our home through the wonderful, yet sometimes overlooked, mail delivery service. Max Lucado, enough said. This smaller-sized, beautiful hardback book would make a great gift for anyone, yet especially for a graduate. It contains short (2-3 page) chapters that address topics titled, 'Find Your Sweet Spot', 'Unpack Your Bag', "Be You-Unique', and 'Read Your Life Backward'.

I just love the summary on the back of the book, it reads:

Da Vinci inted one Mona Lisa. Beethoven composed on Fifth Symphony. And God made one version of you. He custom designed you for a one-of-a-kind assignment. You cannot be anything you want to be. But you can be everything God wants you to be.

Perhaps you've never read a book by Max, or perhaps you have a library full. Either way, this one is a must. Beautifully illustrated, and scriptures filled throughout, I can't wait to give a copy away.
