Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Romance novelist Yvonne MacManus adopts a friendly, conversational tone for this how-to guide. Written more for the reader than the browser--it is all text, with few subtitles and no index--You Can Write a Romance is full of good examples and heartfelt encouragement. MacManus draws on her experience as a romance writer, book editor, and literary agent for the insights she offers. She is passionate about practicalities such as professionalism and organization, but she also harps on the need to proofread your work, which only makes the grammatical errors in this book more irritating. Of particular use are the reprinted writers' guidelines from the genre's top publishers.

5.0 out of 5 stars MacManus Sees Writing as a Retail Business!, April 3, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: You Can Write a Romance ... and Get It Published (Paperback)
Not mentioned in early reviews, You Can Write a Romance (etc.) is also a Writers Book Club Selection. (And the title is not repeated the way it is shown here.)

This book is the nuts-and-bolts of seeing your hard work in print. What you need to know about getting published, and even if an old pro, about half of the book is an explanation of the entire editorial process--from submission right on through post-production.

If you are serious about getting your fiction published, this book is indispensable. It treats authorship no differently from being in the retail world: Light-reading books are products to be marketed, and writers must understand, and accept, that to be successful.

Maybe you can raise the best hogs in South Carolina, but if you can not get them to market...what good are they? So knowing what editors expect from you and from your manuscript is invaluable.

If you are writing both for the emotional reward AND the potential profits, get your act together and learn from this book!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Must Have for Romance Writers, September 25, 2009
This review is from: You Can Write a Romance ... and Get It Published (Paperback)
The author has written at least 3 dozen novels (many Harlequin books under pseudonyms... plus she was a literary agent.

She gives tips on how to add sizzle to your work--how to use cliff hangers, how to include details... how to query, how to write the synopsis, how to format your manuscript, etc.

The book is an easy read from an author who knows what she's talking about.

***I got this book a long time ago, and I'm re-reading it again--it would be nice to have a new updated version.***
