This is the original version with the outstanding intro...don't make the mistake of purchasing the shorter version of this classic Stone's cut.

When I must decline my childrens's wants, and they whine and cry in protest... I play this song really loud to them. Sometimes it does not go over too well.

"You Can't Always Get What You Want" was first released on The Rolling Stones' 1969 album entitled "Let It Bleed;" and it's easily one of their best songs ever. I really like this this song and I agree with the majority of people who comment that the lyrics refer to themes that were particularly hot topics in the 1960s: love, politics (including protesting the Vietnam War) and drugs. The use of The London Bach Choir really enhances the powerful impact of the song and The Stones do the tune perfectly without ever missing a beat! In addition, it's interesting to note how the melancholy flavor of the song is contrasted to what is the somewhat positive sounding "consolation prize" message that "if you try sometimes, you just might find you get what you need." It's also interesting to notice the comparison and contrast between "want" and "need;" this is a universal quandary and consequently it makes "You Can't Always Get What You Want" a very powerful number simply because just about anyone can relate to the lyrics!

Other interpretations of the lyrics are also possible and many are quite likely such as how "Mr. Jimmy" refers to Jimmy Miller who produced a number of albums for the band and who played drums on this number instead of regular band drummer Charlie Watts. There are also many people who believe that the lady referred to in the lyrics is actually Marianne, a woman Mick Jagger became romantically involved with--others think the lady could refer to heroin itself. As can be the case with Stones' lyrics, there is always a cryptic element to the lyrics that allows room for different interpretations of the meaning (or messages) of the song.

I heartily recommend this song for anyone who appreciates creative, classic rock and people just getting into the artistry of The Rolling Stones will not be disappointed. This is one heck of a tune!

Rock and Roll! It's the Stones at their best. How can you not love this. You already know this without reading a review though.
