Book Description

April 2001 4 and upP and upConcept Books (Albert Whitman)
The creators of "ABC for You and Me," an ABC book featuring photos of children with Down syndrome, now offer this simple counting book. Beautiful children with Down syndrome, and their friends, admire "one" bird, play with "seven" ducklings, and zoom "eleven" cars. As the colorful objects gradually increase from one to twenty, readers will find much to hold their attention. Children with Down syndrome will enjoy seeing themselves reflected in this book intended for every preschool and kindergarten classroom.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1-This simple counting book is composed of photographs of children with Down's syndrome holding or touching easily identifiable objects such as toy boats, dogs, ducks, books, and foods. The youngsters, ranging in age from 4 to 10 and from different ethnic backgrounds, are shown alone or with another child, smiling broadly. The bright colors of the items and clothing show up well against the white pages. However, the numerals, while highlighted with colorful backgrounds, may be too small for group sharing. Although the book will be most useful as an introduction to the concept, it also clearly makes the point that children with Down's syndrome enjoy the same playthings and activities as other youngsters.

5.0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK!, December 1, 2002
By
This review is from: 1, 2, 3 for You and Me (Concept Books (Albert Whitman)) (Library Binding)
This is a great book about numbers. It has clear, colorful, beautiful pictures of children with Down Syndrome holding objects to represent the different numbers up to 20. The children in it all look happy and it is a wonderful, cheerful book. It is simply a number book, but the items are easily identifiable and my son (who has DS) really enjoys turning the pages and counting each object. (especially the little girl with the hats!) I would like to see this book on the shelves of every elementary school library. It would be a big ego-booster for children WITH Down Syndrome, and a wonderful learning tool for children without DS.

5.0 out of 5 stars 1,2,3 review, March 8, 2001

This is a very special book for me, not only because of the wonderful children and pictures, but one of my students is on the cover and in other pictures throughout the book. Now everyone can share in the joy of seeing his beautiful smiling face. Behind that beautiful face is a wonderful, kind, and caring young boy who can lift your spirits with his jokes and loving hugs. I think it is wonderful that Meg Girnis protrays children who have Down's Syndrome in her books. I hope she continues to write more children's books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful book celebrating children with Down's Syndrome, January 8, 2009
This review is from: 1, 2, 3 for You and Me (Concept Books (Albert Whitman)) (Library Binding)
This is a beautiful companion book to the earlier published, ABC for You and Me. As a special educator I am thrilled to see books that portray exceptional children in such a positive light. I am happy to include these books in my classroom library and have also bought them for parents of children with Down's. These are terrific for classrooms of typical children as one more way to open the dialogue about diversity. Many of my regular ed. colleagues have also ordered these for their classroom libraries.
