Britain's greatest pop diva, Dusty Springfield was also the finest white soul singer of her era, a performer of remarkable emotional resonance whose body of work spans the decades and their attendant musical transformations with a consistency and purity unmatched by any of her contemporaries; though a camp icon of glamorous excess in her towering beehive hairdo and panda-eye black mascara, the… Read more in Amazon's Dusty Springfield Store

5.0 out of 5 stars No Other Like Dusty!, March 1, 2009

This review is from: You Don't Have to Say You Love Me (Audio CD)
It's very hard to single out any song or album (like The Beatles) from this incredible soulful & angelic performer but this, her 1966 US album, doesn't make it that difficult to consider. Every track is worth the price of admission and I can go on for paragraphs as to why I think so, but I'll save it for now. I do think however, as others noted as well, that "La Bamba" is a track skipper and is out of place on this otherwise Dusty masterpiece. Her soothing yet powerful vocals on this album are flawless as usual, but this is a very special album right from the beginning of the first 7 horn notes of the title track. "Oh No! Not My Baby" is perhaps the most soulful and assuring cover that has EVER been recorded of Maxine Brown's original, but I prefer to hear Dusty's version only. Dusty's versions of the Bacharach/David songs are the most coveted performances, right next to Dionne Warwick. The music and vocals are perfectly complemented here such as in the very emotional "I've Been Wrong Before", which was also covered in 1967 by an obscure but great 60's group, HP Lovecraft. The backing vocals w/ Madeline Bell add some spice to the melodies and are performed exquisitely as well. I love the ambiance and atmosphere created on this album and produced with the right amount of reverb to give it that quintessential 60's sound. Dusty bonus tracks are always welcomed and the ones contained here are all superb, like her version of the R&B/Doo-Wop tune "That's How Heartaches Are Made" & the intense R&B of "Packin' Up". Although, most of my reviews are of 60's psychedelia, this album is in my top 20 of 60's records. This CD reissue, as well as the other 4 US Philips titles are faithful to the original albums and sound quality is Excellent! Love You Dusty!!!
