4.0 out of 5 stars The Missing Link, October 5, 2009
By
This review is from: You Dont Want My Name You Want My Action (4 CD Box) (Audio CD)
This 4-CD set has a small subtitle on the cover: 1971 The Missing Link. Exactly. This is The Stooges after original bassist Dave Alexander had passed away, about one year after Fun House and featuring the unique line-up of Iggy Pop (vocals), Ron Asheton (guitar), James Williamson (guitar), Jimmy Recca (bass guitar) and Scott Asheton (drums)... never before and never again. Other than Jimmy Recca, the remaining four members would to on to record Raw Power, but with Ron Asheton on bass. This release features two of the best guitarists ever, simultaneously, slashing and burning through the material.

Speaking of which, other than I Got A Right, these titles appear no where else... another unique feature within this package. Four concerts from the same tour are featured here and the songs played remain the same for all four shows and CDs.

Other things you should know: while a legitimate release, with permission of the surviving band members, who also will receive royalties, this is essentially a deluxe "bootleg" ...the recordings were made on lo-fi cassettes and have been cleaned up as much as possible by Easy Action. The result will either be less than hoped for by those who only want high-quality live material, but far more than expected for those of us who are used to bootleg-quality live material from that time period. The music manages to power through admirably (with the exception of Iggy Pop, who did not record well) thanks to the efforts of those involved.

The packaging is also better than any Stooges bootleg that has gone before, housed in a thick "book" format with "bonus" replica Polaroids and concert ticket. One quibble is the disc holders are stapled to a rather flimsy cardboard stock, so mine is already separating. Be careful when handling!

In summary, this set is a revelation for Stooges fans. Again, containing material never released before with a never before (or after) Stooges line-up. It is as good as it gets for a "bootleg" (especially considering the source material) and was lovingly put together as a final package that will have an honored place on your CD rack.

Perhaps this is not a good place to start for those new to The Stooges (due mainly to the less than modern sound-quality), but destined to be a favorite for completists and those who can tolerate the less-than-perfect technology of the original recordings for the opportunity to hear The Stooges during one of their best power periods.

Very highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars For Die Hard Fans Only, December 20, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: You Dont Want My Name You Want My Action (4 CD Box) (Audio CD)
If you look at my other reviews, you will see I have purchased a lot of Stooges material. When buying an unoffical album by the band, it is hard to know sometimes what you are getting. This is a cool box set and well packaged. The two things to note about this album are : 1. It's a glorified bootleg. The sound quality is not that good. It is not as bad as some other live Stooges' recordings out there, but that isn't really saying a whole lot because some of those are really bad. 2. It has songs that are only avalible here. If you are a die hard Stooges fan, you might want those tracks like I did. It is also a chance to catch the Stooges live in concert. If you've heard any live Stooges album, regardless of sound qulity, than you know they put on one amaizng show. These concerts are no exception. If you're looking at this set on Amazon, than you probably know what you're getting yourself into. I just want you to know you won't be dissapointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars "Gimme danger, little stranger...", December 29, 2009

This review is from: You Dont Want My Name You Want My Action (4 CD Box) (Audio CD)
Admittedly, this recording is for Stooges pervs only (and presumably, there are a lot of us!) I was lucky enough to receive it for Christmas, and it's been making me smile, cackle and shake my head ever since! This 'five-man-band Stooges' (and I don't mean including Scott Thurston) makes a relentless racket - mostly on otherwise unrecorded songs (many of which feel like jams or pastiches) but the guitar interplay between Ron and James is like the heavenly angels. Ig's only somewhat audible most of the time, but the POWER is most definitely RAW (hehheh). Highly recommended to fans of the Velvet Underground's "Guess I'm Fallin' In Love"...
