The Missing Link,
By
This review is from: You Dont Want My Name You Want My Action (4 CD Box) (Audio CD)
This 4-CD set has a small subtitle on the cover: 1971 The Missing Link. Exactly. This is The Stooges after original bassist Dave Alexander had passed away, about one year after Fun House and featuring the unique line-up of Iggy Pop (vocals), Ron Asheton (guitar), James Williamson (guitar), Jimmy Recca (bass guitar) and Scott Asheton (drums)... never before and never again. Other than Jimmy Recca, the remaining four members would to on to record Raw Power, but with Ron Asheton on bass. This release features two of the best guitarists ever, simultaneously, slashing and burning through the material.
Speaking of which, other than I Got A Right, these titles appear no where else... another unique feature within this package. Four concerts from the same tour are featured here and the songs played remain the same for all four shows and CDs. Other things you should know: while a legitimate release, with permission of the surviving band members, who also will receive royalties, this is essentially a deluxe "bootleg" ...the recordings were made on lo-fi cassettes and have been cleaned up as much as possible by Easy Action. The result will either be less than hoped for by those who only want high-quality live material, but far more than expected for those of us who are used to bootleg-quality live material from that time period. The music manages to power through admirably (with the exception of Iggy Pop, who did not record well) thanks to the efforts of those involved. The packaging is also better than any Stooges bootleg that has gone before, housed in a thick "book" format with "bonus" replica Polaroids and concert ticket. One quibble is the disc holders are stapled to a rather flimsy cardboard stock, so mine is already separating. Be careful when handling! In summary, this set is a revelation for Stooges fans. Again, containing material never released before with a never before (or after) Stooges line-up. It is as good as it gets for a "bootleg" (especially considering the source material) and was lovingly put together as a final package that will have an honored place on your CD rack. Perhaps this is not a good place to start for those new to The Stooges (due mainly to the less than modern sound-quality), but destined to be a favorite for completists and those who can tolerate the less-than-perfect technology of the original recordings for the opportunity to hear The Stooges during one of their best power periods. Very highly recommended.

If you look at my other reviews, you will see I have purchased a lot of Stooges material. When buying an unoffical album by the band, it is hard to know sometimes what you are getting. This is a cool box set and well packaged. The two things to note about this album are : 1. It's a glorified bootleg. The sound quality is not that good. It is not as bad as some other live Stooges' recordings out there, but that isn't really saying a whole lot because some of those are really bad. 2. It has songs that are only avalible here. If you are a die hard Stooges fan, you might want those tracks like I did. It is also a chance to catch the Stooges live in concert. If you've heard any live Stooges album, regardless of sound qulity, than you know they put on one amaizng show. These concerts are no exception. If you're looking at this set on Amazon, than you probably know what you're getting yourself into. I just want you to know you won't be dissapointed.

Admittedly, this recording is for Stooges pervs only (and presumably, there are a lot of us!) I was lucky enough to receive it for Christmas, and it's been making me smile, cackle and shake my head ever since! This 'five-man-band Stooges' (and I don't mean including Scott Thurston) makes a relentless racket - mostly on otherwise unrecorded songs (many of which feel like jams or pastiches) but the guitar interplay between Ron and James is like the heavenly angels. Ig's only somewhat audible most of the time, but the POWER is most definitely RAW (hehheh). Highly recommended to fans of the Velvet Underground's "Guess I'm Fallin' In Love"...

BEST SURPRISE ACQUISITION,

Yeah, I acquired this as a completist but it's been a long stretch of living since a surprise was this great. You get oodles of Stooges' songs you've never heard before (and that barely were recalled by its living practicioners) played with tight, caucaphonous gusto for several nights' variations of sets, and played back as if you yourself had taped it at the gigs back in the day. (Yes, this description diminishes the practically Biblical resurrection of sounds from its source material by Easy Action, but I like the "you are there" analogy.) I find myself playing this at least once a week since I purchased it, Disc 1 for headphones, and Disc 3 for blasting in the car.

As others have mentioned, the quality is OK but if it is worth it. These shows were mentioned in the Open Up and Bleed biography of Iggy Pop and I am glad to have found them. Lyrics are very hard to make out but the hum of the equipment, small talk in the crowd about the band, and the power of Ron and James playing guitar is amazing. "Dead Body" is by far my favorite. What amazes me is this is nothing like Funhouse or Metallic KO, and does not resemble Raw Power. This is the most important piece to my Stooges collection.

From my husband: I bought this last week and haven't stopped playing it since. The 4 cds sound great, even with the volume turned up, and prove that The Stooges were into gut-busting power chords long before the English punk explosion of the late 70s. Ron Asheton and James Williamson blitz their way through numbers not found on any other Stooges' releases (OK, I Got a Right was recorded for Raw Power but never made it onto the album) and that gives this well-packaged set (recorded in 1971) its own unique flavour and bite. In fact, amongst the numerous semi-official Stooges' live albums on the market, this tops them all for sheer energetic power, and that includes Metallic KO. Buy this and the Live at Unganos 1970 cd, and you can fully appreciate why Iggy and his band are so revered by rock fans. A must-have purchase for Stooges addicts.

When The Stooges embarked on this short 1971 tour in April and May - essentially, still in support of "Funhouse" - the Led Zeppelin sonic revolution was in full flight and putting what became a permanent imprint on the music charts and radio playlists....but it was still early enough in the game where cloning was not the biggest priority at record labels.
The band blasted off on its own heavy metal thunder in the short-lived lineup (10 gigs, with four chronicled on this "authorized bootleg") featuring Ron Asheton and James Williamson sizzling on guitars, along with Jimmy Recca (b), Scott Asheton (d) and a focused Iggy reveling in the sound garden. The concerts were recorded on cassettes by Danny Fields - discs one and two from May 14 and 15, respectively, in NYC and disc four, the April 13 opening date in Detroit - and John Caspermeyer, which is the third disc and the last tour stop (May 27) in St. Louis. These low-fi audience tapings have been cleaned up as well as possible. The NYC tapings seemed to have been set up to focus on the instruments, since Iggy is only heard in spurts. The Detroit disc - though the roughest - is the best to hear the vocals. The professionalism by Easy Action is what makes this very special; it opens like a book, with the six attached sleeves housing the four discs, a quality booklet and four souvenir photos that have an old-school look. The slick layout also includes a number of shots from the tour. There was untapped potential with this two-guitar blitz, which unfortunately never made it to vinyl. But the "what if's" on the possible breakthrough that eluded The Stooges makes this limited edition release incredibly fascinating.

I may not be the best person to review this for the average fan, because I have to have everything The Stooges put out. Now, having said that, even though some of the sound is murky, it gives the feeling of that time in the Stooges career. I think being able to go back and hear what it was like is just great. The material is fantastic and a lot of fun to listen too.The Stooges live is a treat and a young Iggy going crazy, no way to beat it.
