Editorial Reviews

Musical depth and Christian joy have rarely come together as compellingly as they do in the music of Dara Maclean. Her s is a joyful mix of pop idioms and eternal truths, danceable beats and the good news. "I love making music you can move and groove to, " she says, "but at the same time, as a Christian artist, we have a responsibility to speak the truth in love. "

A singer of incredible grace, power and control, as well as a gifted songwriter, Dara has put together, with the help of Dove Award-winning producer Ian Eskelin, a debut CD that is as fresh and vibrant as any in recent years. The project combines the soul and urban pop influences that infuse her musical approach with soaring vocals in service to intelligently uplifting lyrics.

"Suitcases, " her debut single, is driven by a hip-hop beat and a vocal approach alternately intimate and soaring. It s an offer of true release from "your burdens, heavy like gravity."

"I want to paint a picture of God s complete restorative love and how through Christ, we have an opportunity to live free, " she says. "This song does just that. "

Influenced by contemporaries like Adele, Lauryn Hill, Natasha Bedingfield, Ray Lamontagne and Marc Broussard, she has also incorporated the Motown funk and soul she came to love growing up. The combination makes for a sound that is pure celebration. It captures as few artists ever have, the joy and exuberance of being swept up in God s love. It is an approach she comes by honestly.

"I grew up singing, dancing and acting, and it s been in the church world, " she says. "Music has always equaled ministry to me. Ministering to the broken, unloved and discouraged and ultimately showing people God s better way is what s in my heart. It s how I m wired. "

Fervent Records' soulful new artist Dara Maclean is guaranteed to turn heads with the release of her debut album, You Got My Attention. Produced by Dove Award-winner Ian Eskelin (Francesca Battistelli, Sidewalk Prophets), Maclean's debut combines the soul and urban pop influences that infuse her musical approach with soaring vocals in service to intelligently uplifting lyrics. A singer of incredible grace, power and control as well as a gifted songwriter, she wrote or co-wrote all 12 of the tracks on the album. Opening track "Suitcases" is the debut single driven by an infectious beat and a vocal approach alternately intimate and soaring, and is an offer of true release from "your burdens, heavy like gravity." I was immediately hooked right from the opening notes and the song uses the metaphor of carrying suitcases as a perfect depiction of the weight of sin that we don't need to carry with us if we've put our faith in Jesus for our salvation. Dara gorgeously sings "You can't run when you're holding suitcases, It's a new day throw away your mistakes and open up your heart, Lay down your guard, you don't have to be afraid." According to Dara, "I wanted to paint a picture of God's complete restorative love and how through Christ, we have an opportunity to live free," she says. "This song does just that." Amen. Dara displays the strongest vocals I've heard in years, and her Brit-pop sounding vocals are similar to Adele and Natasha Bedingfield wrapped around Motown style soulful music as displayed on upbeat title track "You Got My Attention," which is one of several 5 star songs on this flawless 5 star album.

"Unreachable," "What Love Looks Like" and "Yours Forever" are all very personal songs where Dara really unveils what's on her heart.

I'm always a little bit leery of trying out new artists because I hate to be disappointed after spending $10-12 on a CD. I LOVE this album. Everything just works - the music, the lyrics, the vocals. There is a great variety on the album, and Dara's vocals are outstanding. I hate to compare her, but if you like Francesca Battistelli, then I'm pretty sure you will like Dara MacLean. This album hasn't left my CD player since I got it a couple weeks ago. Go ahead, give her a try!!

This album really surprised me. Dara Maclean has a unique voice, and to pair it up with creative songs focussing on the love for God, was definitely a gorgeous idea! My favorite song, : "Free", and "Suitcases". The second track "You got my attention" is also fun!

At first when I heard about Dara Maclean, I was kinda perplexed. I stayed away from this album because i thought it was gonna be just some dance/pop music with 'Jesus' sprinkled here and there. Then I heard her at winter jam and was like wow! She does have that dance/motown voice but boy can she sing...but she does it for the Lord. I waited a while although this album is so good i now wondered why i waited. She may not sing 'Jesus' in every song but you can tell He's a constant presence in her songs. I love it! I just hope that 'Christian music' isn't just a 'oh i did that' type thing. If she stays on the straight and narrow...she will become a precious jewel in christian music for many years to come.

I saw her perform in a local church and she is so approachable, humble, not to mention a great artist, composer and performer. Her voice is unique. You could easily distinguish her voice from other artists when you hear her. Her songs are written from personal experience, hence the depth of the lyrics. You could easily relate to her songs. If you like Francesca Batistelli, you would love Dara Maclean, too!

Highly recommended!

If you are a fan of Fancesca Battistelli's you'll love Dara
Maclean. I love this CD because it has the perfect combination to create a Country and Soul vibe that just works. It's upbeat and catchy, she'll have you trying to memorize the lyrics to her songs in no time. One key thing that I respect in any Christian artist is their ability to sing of CHRIST alone on their CD... I personally love that, and Dara does just that. Her Lyrics are impacting, Her voice is impeccable, and the music is uplifting! I recommend this CD to anyone who is looking for a new voice to play on their stereo or through their ear buds. I can guarantee you wont be disappointed! God Bless and Happy listening :)

A lot of "gems" in this recording that could be overlooked unless you have access to the full recording. Dara Maclean's style recalls '80's soul music. Her voice has an interesting quality that can pull you into songs you've never heard before. I really like this recording and am very glad that I have it.
