Pure Four-Engine Fun with A Runaway Bride,
By
This review is from: You Gotta Stay Happy [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This is the film adaptation of the story of the same name that was serialized in the Saturday Evening Post.Jimmy Stewart is a pilot and president of an air shipping company. In his first scene he lives up to his character's name: Payne. Eddie Albert is the swinging playboy co-pilot. Joan Fontaine is a rich orphan forced into an unwanted marriage. Joan runs from her marriage on the wedding night, seeks refuge with Jimmy and gets a ride in his cargo plane. After the plane is forced down in a storm, the cast spend the night at a farmhouse (Yes, it's Pa Kettle by a different name). There Joan learns from the other women that with true love you will know right away at the first kiss. Joan then pounces on Jimmy and declares him the one. But crooks and hidden identities confuse the plot and it looks like things are off for Jimmy and Joan. This is a true screwball comedy that would have made Capra proud (There are even shades of It Happened One Night). Unusual for the style, there is plenty of location shooting, most notably in Chicago where we see the lakefront, Chicago's Midway Airport (at Monarch Air Services), and The Wrigley Building (made into a bank). Fast, fun and romantic. A must see for fans of classic romantic comedies. I just don't understand why this one hasn't been more visible over the years.

The best DC-3 footage ever!,
This review is from: You Gotta Stay Happy [VHS] (VHS Tape)
You wanta see the old DC-3 in action, there's no better film than this. Heck, even the story is fun. But the shots of the DC-3 in action are as real as it gets. Even the procedures in the cockpit are authentic. Jimmy Stewart put his love of aviation to use here and it shows.
Did you know that he twice received the Distinguished Flying Cross for actions in combat, and was awarded the Croix de Guerre. He also received the Air Medal with three oak leaf clusters. In July, 1944, after flying twenty combat missions, Stewart was made Chief of Staff of the 2nd Combat Bomb Wing of the Eighth Air Force. Anyway, a fun story, a pleasure to watch and those old DC-3s! Glorious! But, WHERE'S THE DVD ALREADY?!!

You gotta stay happy,

This is a fine film that is slapstick and silliness all rolled together. Joan Fontaine has made better films, but she shines as always. I really think it's worth watching and as a twenty-something person I hope people don't forget gems like this one.
