I really enjoyed this book. Sharon does a great job capturing the feelings and details of the Portland music scene -- and the larger culture in general -- in the 1980s. She is a great storyteller, and she has a lot of great stories to tell. Full disclosure, though: I had the pleasure of working with Sharon as the publicist for my band, the Van Goghs, who figure in many of those stories.

Since I came of age in the Pacific Northwest (Seattle, not Portland)in the early 80's, I had at least a passing familiarity with much of what was written in You Had To Be There. The author does an excellent job of capturing the vibe of what it was like to be young and part of a thriving music scene. Many passages had me nodding my head and saying "Yes, I remember that." You don't need to be familiar with any of the bands to enjoy this book - you just have to be able to remember what it's like to be young, alive and feeling like you're part of the music.

This book is well worth the price for just the memories alone. Many good Portland bands are featured, and a few that never broke big but are still around, and that is what makes this book the bomb !!!

As a Portland native, who experienced the music scene as a spectator, I thought this would be interesting, especially after meeting the author online. Unfortunately, it isn't written well and she seems to be promoting her own coolness more than enlightening history.

I never made it past the 2nd chapter.

Sorry Sharon.
