You actually hear him say stop for some reason during the song.

I have just started to get into the throws of jazz music, and I must say that this cd was the best beginning anyone could ask for.

I was lucky enough to be at the Hidden Beach Recordings launch party in 2000 and I have been waiting for this cd ever since I saw mike perform there. The three acts that performed where Mike Phillips first, then Brenda Russell and Jill Scott closed it out. Since then I have purchased the company's WHO IS JILL SCOTT and live EXPERIENCE CDs the Brenda Russell PARIS RAIN CD and the wonderful UNWRAPPED. I have never been disapointed so I expected to love this CD as well. BUT even expecting to love it, it BLOWS AWAY MY EXPECTATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!! IT IS SIMPLY PHENOMINAL!!! SUPERB!!!!!! THE BEST EVER FIRST ALBUM by a musician I have ever heard and I have a big collection!!!!!!!!
This is so good I can't stop playing it!!!
His energy is so powerful. I perdict this will be a CD by which all others to follow will be judged!!!!!!!
Quite simply, IT DOESNT GET BETTER and I am a harsh critic. This is my first review ever. There isn;t a bad song on the entire CD.
Order this one and you will be moved to write a review as well.
I hope this helps you.

Mike Phillips delivers jazz licks like a master mc rhymes. The tittle track "you have reached Mike Phillips is both jazzy and funky at the same time. 'just one take' weaves notes that provide an ear full of a smooth melody that stays in your head after the song is over. "Huron Ave" is reminiscent of the sites and sounds of Chicago in the fall. "when my baby calls" is the ultimate slow jam to dance too. I predict this CD is going to be the summer jam for 2002. What I like about Mike Phillips uses his saxophone like a singer with a rich soulful voice and takes the sounds to a new level. His delivery though out the CD is a blend of jazz,r&b with the edge of hip-hop. Mike Philip's truly changing the game in the arena of "street jazz" Can't wait to experience Mike in concert!

I had never heard of him before. Luckily, he was performing live on WHUR here in DC and he blew me away. I got the CD and am not dissappointed...well except for the first 3 short intro things. My favorites are the slow jams, tracks 13, 14 and 15. Track 15, Maria, is sooooooooo beautiful. When I listen to it, I envision sharing a warm bubble bath with that special someone surrounded by candles and cold champagne. Mike does loves songs on the sax the way Luther does them on the MIC. Go get this one and you'll be a believer too. Mike Phillips...HE'S A BADD MAN!!!

This is one of those albums that you don't realize how good it is until you let the whole thing play while you're not really paying attention and then you say......."That song is the Jam. And so is that one!" And its cool because there is variety. From the Hip Hop of "You Have Reached.." and "Stop What your Doin'" to the lush "Will You Stick With Me" to the smoldering and soulful "Baby Calls". There is something for everyone represented here and its all infintely listenable.

Very nice combination of cool jazz and soft funk. Would have given 5 stars but the "lyrical bridges" between tracks are a distration from the very good tunes.

Now,now, now are all my fellow artists/music "knowitalls" lashing their dreams deferred out on Mr. Mike Phillips? Maybe. I found this brothers "FIRST ALBUM" to be quite good. I agree that it is the kind of cd that you can ride to or sit on the deck, relax and chill.I as well as many of my friends have made many great memories with this album. I only hope the brand new joint brings many more!To all the hatin' saxophonists.....I only hope we can review your cd IF and WHEN you get signed and cut one!!!!

This is a good, smooth, saxophone cd. I play this CD at work to get me through the day, along with many others. Although he may not be a Classic Great, he knows how to play the saxophone and sounds great doing it. Maybe he is not "make me fall out of my seat" amazing, but he holds his own very well. I think he is a great talent and I look forward to getting more of his CDs. I especially enjoy the song with the freeflow poetry in it. Something I have not heard in a while, especially featured on a music CD. A recommended addition to your jazz CD collection.

Mike Phillips can do something with his saxophone that no vocals in any other song have been able to do, communicate real, true soul. His fluent playing seems to slip right through you, as though it was a sort of water that had no real substantial form, only the feeling it left behind. That's what it feels like to listen to "You Have Reached Mike Phillips"
I bought this CD not sure what to expect, I'd liked what I'd heard so far, the thirty second teasers and reviews I had read, but they all understated his talent. I'm not sure if it's raw talent or just the ability to communicate. Either way, that's exactly what he does, communicate, no words needed. Not only does this CD have soul, but it has vibes too, songs that even as you let yourself feel the song, you find yourself nodding your head to the beat. He has a whole range of different songs, from the straightforward saxophone serenade of "You Have Reached Mike Phillips (prelude)" to the creative jazz splashed spoken word composition "A True Story (Tabernacle - ATL)" and finally, to the R&B single (with of course a sax solo) called "Wonderful and Special" featuring Jazdin Reddy. If there were words enough to express how magnificent this album is, I'd write a much longer review, but there aren't. All I can say is that this CD has as much soul as any album out there, or more.
