Book Description

March 6, 2007

Wild at Heart helped men to rediscover their masculine hearts-to be the men God designed them to be. Now this small book goes a step further, encouraging fathers to pass this insight on to their children. It is not by accident, contends John Eldredge, that little boys dream of being heroes and little girls dream of being rescued by a prince. It is woven into the very fiber of the sexes. Men struggle with this most pivotal role, and Eldredge's writing is the affirmation and encouragement each man needs.

Eldredge gives fathers a look inside both themselves and their sons and daughters, encouraging them to give their children permission to be who God designed them to be.

More About the Author

John Eldredge is an author (you probably figured that out), a counselor, and teacher. He is also president of Ransomed Heart, a ministry devoted to helping people discover the heart of God, recover their own heart in his love, and learn to live in his Kingdom. John grew up in the suburbs of Los Angeles (which he hated), and spent his boyhood summers on his grandfather's cattle ranch in eastern Oregon (which he loved). John met his wife Stasi in high school (in drama class). But their romance did not begin until they each came to faith in Christ, after high school. John earned his undergraduate degree in Theater at Cal Poly, and directed a theater company in Los Angeles for several years before moving to Colorado with Focus on the Family, where he taught at the Focus on the Family Institute.

John earned his master's degree in Counseling from Colorado Christian University, under the direction of Larry Crabb and Dan Allender. He worked as a counselor in private practice before launching Ransomed Heart in 2000. John and Stasi live in Colorado Springs with their three sons (Samuel, Blaine and Luke), their golden retriever (Oban), and two horses (Whistle and Kokolo). While all of this is factually true, it somehow misses describing an actual person. He loves the outdoors passionately, and all beauty, Shakespeare, bow hunting, a good cigar, anything having to do with adventure, poetry, March Madness, working in the shop, fly fishing, classic rock, the Tetons, fish tacos, George MacDonald, green tea, buffalo steaks, dark chocolate, wild and open places, horses running, and too much more to name. He also uses the expression "far out" way too much.

5.0 out of 5 stars You Have What It Takes: What Every Father Needs to Know, June 2, 2004

I wish I had read this book 20 years ago! However, it's never too late to start being the father you were intended to be. This book lays it out in a most simple way. Quick read and a MUST read. You will want to order a box of these and give to all the dads you know, I did!

2.0 out of 5 stars "Snippet", March 14, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I ordered, received, and RETURNED this item.... If I had known it was a "snippet" of Wild At Heart (a book I already OWN!) I never would have purchased it... the price printed on the cover as the retail price was $2.99.... I paid $6.95 (when included with a couple of other books: I got free shipping....)

Disappointed and awaiting the refunded amount to show on my credit card...

You should just get the WHOLE J. Eldredge books -- the Wild At Heart is def. an AMAZING book and ALL fathers (and mothers, for that matter!!) should really enjoy the God-given wisdom and enjoyable stories and anecdotes in many of Mr. Eldredge's books! He is an incredibly gifted author and worth the cost of buying and reading the entire book...

Unless you are intending to give this 'booklet' to a new father to whet his appetite for the whole book, I suggest you save your money.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's never too late to begin healing., June 6, 2007
By
FaithfulReader.com (New York, New York) - See all my reviews
John Eldredge is the author of numerous books, including WILD AT HEART, which sold more than two million copies and was used as the guide for hundreds of men's Bible study groups. He is one of many Christians who has recognized the value of fathers in raising children, and is not afraid to identify the differences between the genders and explain how they generate different needs. Eldredge demonstrates how understanding these needs and differences is essential to raising emotionally and spiritually healthy children.

Each chapter (which includes "The Secret to Boys"; "What a Father Needs to Do"; "Healing Wounds"; and "It's Never Too Late") is only a few pages long yet is packed with the core of emotions that everyone has experienced as a result of their own relationship with their father. Whether it was wonderful and everlasting or non-existent and painful, there is no denying that the father/child relationship is perhaps the most life-shaping of all.

In an age when "Who's Your Daddy?" has become a national joke, the existence of absentee, ineffectual and abusive fathers is just beginning to reap its consequences. Boys whose needs were not met by their fathers are growing up and becoming negligent parents as well. Many believe it is these unmet needs and resulting wounded spirits that are primarily responsible for creating the angry, frustrated and rebellious youth we see today.

In his down-to-earth writing style, Eldredge uses many personal anecdotes, linking them to Scriptures that illustrate the source of his beliefs. He concludes that ultimately it is God the Father who provides the model for love and forgiveness so necessary in healthy relationships.

YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES is sure to inspire those who read it to take action in their own lives. Whether your child is four or 40, it's never too late to begin healing.
