1.0 out of 5 stars A Little Bit of A Good Message Sandwiched Between Two Really Irresponsible Ones
I borrowed this book from the library in hopes that I would like it enough to buy the very pretty gift edition. (The colorful, pretty gift edition appealed to my ADD and I knew if I liked it, it would be something I would refer to often.)

I picked up the book from the library and perused it while I waited for the bus so I could go back to work. One of the...

5.0 out of 5 stars This Book Saved My Life, December 21, 1999
This review is from: You Can Heal Your Life (Gift Edition) (Perfect Paperback)
Louise Hay has been there and done that and this is evidenced by the content of her book. When I first bought a copy of You Can Heal Her Life, I read the first 2 chapters, and put the book down. I was angry because Ms Hay was telling me like it was, and I didn't want to hear the truth. I didn't want to look at myself and take responsibility for my life and my happiness and my health. I wanted to be told that My situation was beyond my control. A couple of years later, I picked up that copy of You Can Heal Your Life, ready to read it and hear the truth that saved Ms Hay's life, years before. As I worked through the exercises and started practicing the affirmations in the way Ms Hay instructed, I literally began to heal my life of suicidal depression, kidney disfunction, arthritis, and the hurt of child sexual abuse, as well as a slew of other problems. A miracle happened. I started to become happy. Since this time, I have continued to use the mirror exercises and affirmations that she describes, and continued to work to change my thought patterns. As a result of this, my attitudes have changed, and I have become a much more positive, optimistic person. Everything that I need in life seems to come to me as I need it. I used to get sick with great regularity, catching everything whether it was a common disease/disorder or not, and I rarely get sick or become injured now. I am happy almost every day and am seeing my dreams come true. The last 10 years, since I read You Can Heal Your Life for the first time, have been a wonderous journey, and I wouldn't trade it for anything. While I did the work, I owe a debt of gratitude to Louise Hay for writing and marketing this book so that her message could reach me and countless others. I have seen the same kind of results in almost a dozen other people who have read You Can Heal Your Life. There is a better way, and this is it. Give it a try, you're worth it! Love and Peace!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Psychological Side of Healing, November 4, 2008
This review is from: You Can Heal Your Life (Gift Edition) (Perfect Paperback)
You Can Heal Your Life (Gift Edition) is all about using your thoughts to fix the problems in your life. What kind of problems? Well, the book specifically looks into healing some pretty major life areas: relationships, work, success, prosperity, and your body. But wait a minute, did I say the book is using thoughts to heal your body? What's up with that? Is that even possible? Well, after reading this book, I think in many cases, yes, it is possible.

While I think it is the way to go to treat things such as an acute appendicitis with surgery, fractures with a cast, and pneumonia with antibiotics, there are many conditions where conventional medicine blatently falls short. Of course I'm talking about health problems such as migraines, backaches, or stomach ulcers- you know, those kinds of nagging disorders where we all know that stress/mental processes DO play a role. But while few would argue that psychological factors can cause an ulcer, what about more serious conditions such as, say, arthritis?

Well it may not be too far fetched. Consider this. One study of 1,198 subjects found that only 56% of men with SEVERE knee arthritis had any pain (Lawrence 1966). Another study X-rayed 84 seventy-nine year-olds and 76 eighty-five year-olds and found that only 43% of them with SEVERE knee arthritis had any pain complaints (Bagge 1991). There are plenty more examples in the scientific literature, but obviously there two alone show us that there is NO clear-cut association between severe knee arthritis and pain.

ON THE OTHER HAND, when one looks at the relationship between psychological variables and knee arthritis, one does see a clear association. For instance, one study looked at 65 patients (ages 55 to 87) with hip and/or knee arthritis. X-rays, pain, depression levels, anxiety levels, coping styles, and functional impairment were all assessed. The findings? Researchers discovered that the severity of one's arthritis showed little relationship to pain, BUT, psychological variables were strong predictors of who had pain and how impaired they were (Summers 1988).

Along the same lines, Salaffi examined 61 women (ages 51-79) with knee arthritis. Here again, results showed that how disabled someone was, was more related to psychological variables than how bad their knee looked on an X-ray film. Interestingly, both anxiety and depression WERE important predictors of pain (Salaffi 1991). Any one conducting a literature review on Medline will find more such examples IF you're looking for them. While I used knee arthritis as an example, there are MANY more studies on other health problems with similar findings.

All of this should be causing us to raise an eyebrow. The literature is telling us that it is far from being clear cut that things like bad knee arthritis ALWAYS mean pain. And the research is also giving us clues that the mind and our thought processes definitely play a role. So the question now becomes, if bad thought patterns can play a role in health problems such as arthritis, why not in other diseases such as cancer, as the book suggests?

You be the judge. I found that the main value in this book was getting me to look at how our thinking does influence the functioning of our bodies- as well as our life in general. Note that I'm NOT saying that you can think yourself well all the time either.

Remember that while Louise Hay did change her thought patterns and was cured of cancer, she has also written that she used other alternative treatments as well, such as foot reflexology and colon therapy (Chapter 16). Therefore, my advice is to look at ALL the options when dealing with a health problem, one MAJOR one being changing your mental patterns (which is the what the book does a nice job of addressing). And for this reason, I can recommend this book to anyone who needs physical healing or otherwise. Other alternative healing books of interest include The Divided Mind: The Epidemic of Mindbody Disorders and The 5-Minute Plantar Fasciitis Solution. Thank you Louise Hay!

5.0 out of 5 stars I didn't want to believe it but it's so true., May 20, 2009

I thought I would buy this book as a last resort for my depression. I started reading it, said the affirmations out loud, laughed as I was saying them and then bam, they started to happen. What's nice about reading the book before your affirmations start to happen is that you become aware when they do start to happen. I loved this book so much, I bought a copy for a friend who is getting the same thing out of it as I did.

4.0 out of 5 stars At first I was hesitant about this book, but after a few chapters... I was captivated, March 8, 2007
This review is from: You Can Heal Your Life (Gift Edition) (Perfect Paperback)
This book was recommended to me after my family suffered a tragedy. At first I was hesitant about it. A non-beleiver, you can say. But Louise Hay broke her message down into easy-to-understand chapters. After reading a few chapters I was convinced that she was right on target.

I learned alot while reading this book. I've applied the techniques from the book to my everyday life, and have had successful results. I'm glad that I was given this book. Unfortunately, I had to give it back, which is why I'm here..... ordering another one.

(Worth the $15 though.)

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book on how to lead a beautiful life, June 29, 2007
By
This review is from: You Can Heal Your Life (Gift Edition) (Perfect Paperback)
Much has been said about this book, so what else can I add to it? I am writing this simply because this book deserves all the praise and accolades heaped on it. In this book, many words of wisdom on self-improvement come across as intuitive and obvious, yet it took me so long to realise their truth.

What does it take to lead a charmed life? Self-love and gratitude are some of the basic ingredients for fulfillment and self-actualization. Don't we all wish that others would love us more and stop taking us for granted? But as the author suggests, it has to start with how we treat ourselves. We need to learn to accept and love ourselves as we are, before we can expect others to do the same.

There is a time for everything. One needs to be ready and receptive in order to gain the benefits from reading this book. For those who have rejected it on their first reading, I would strongly urge you to give it another go. It may bring on a new chapter in your life, just it has done for many of us here, including myself.

5.0 out of 5 stars DISCOVER THE REAL YOU!, April 23, 2001
By
Sandra D. Peters "Seagull Books" (Prince Edward Island, Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: You Can Heal Your Life (Gift Edition) (Perfect Paperback)
"You Can Heal Your Life" is a beautifully written and illustrated book dealing with self-discovery. It is a stepping stone in finding the real person you are and exploring ways that will lead to a more peaceful and happy life. Often, we are our own worst enemies with imaginary fears of what the future will bring, or we are dwellers of our past mistakes, regrets and misgivings. The importance of discovering and accepting our true self for who we really are, and the search for a more fulfilling life, are explored among the pages of this book.

Some of the words here are very much similar to Buddhist Philosophies. It is a known fact that before we can start anew, we must first rid ourself of all negative emotions and habits, more commonly known in this day and age as, "getting rid of the excess baggage." This is a wonderful self-help book that will lead you on a path of positive thinking and leave the reader with the understanding no one is perfect, we all have faults, but we can still feel good about ourselves.

If you are interested in exploring more fully the world of peace, contentment and happiness, I also recommend reading , "Awakening the Buddha Within" by Lama Surya Das and "Healing Society" by Dr. Seung-Heun Lee. Both are excellent books and a realistic learning adventure in self-discovery.

I've been working on myself for awhile and Louise Hay continues to be one of my greatest influences. Her approach is simple yet so complete and the results are profound. I love this book - everything is in here and it is such a joy to read and look at. I find the illustrations alone to be uplifting. Thanks Louise! You give me so much hope.

4.0 out of 5 stars It is about personal responsibility, July 6, 2006
This review is from: You Can Heal Your Life (Gift Edition) (Perfect Paperback)
In the 70s, I read Ken Dychtwald's book BODYMIND and learned early in my life just how amazingly connected our bodies are to what goes on inside our minds. What Hay presents in her book is a direct correlation between illness and where a person is mentally, emotionally, or spiritually. Her premise is that each illness has a root cause in self-limiting or negative thinking (From Hay's book: Gout stems from the need to dominate and impatience or anger. Stroke stems from a sense of giving up or resistance -- the idea of "I'd rather die than change.") Even accidents are no accident, according to her. This understanding of health is a challenge to anyone reading the book because Hay lets you know fairly gently that you are responsible for you ... and your health.

If you are a person who doesn't embrace personal responsibility ("My boss makes me mad," "It is my mom's fault I grew up this way," "If I could get that loan, my life would be just fine," "I AM NOT defensive!"), then this book will probably just make you angry. If you are a person who wants to explore deep within yourself for those life-changing root causes, then give this book a try. Just don't beat yourself up over sicknesses that affect you now and instead see if changing your thoughts can help you start the healing process. I personally don't give much credence to the oft-repeated verbal affirmations Hay recommends -- she has them for each illness -- but reading them once and comparing them to your current thought patterns can be revealing and helpful.

5.0 out of 5 stars YOUR LIFE WILL CHANGE, February 6, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: You Can Heal Your Life (Gift Edition) (Perfect Paperback)
Louise Hay's book was great. It changed my life after the first three chapters. The book was colorful and flowed nicely. I was in a depressed state and my sister sent me a copy of her book. I have almost finished the book, and I am going to keep it and re-read it because it makes me realize that I can be a happy person. I just need to release the past and tell myself its time for change. I immediately sent it to my other sister so she too can change her life.

Thank you Louise!

5.0 out of 5 stars Bravo! Bravo! Bravoooo!, August 8, 2002
By
This review is from: You Can Heal Your Life (Gift Edition) (Perfect Paperback)
OK, well, I know some day I will read books that are not "thinkers" but for now, I like books that help you change for the better. Louise is a wonderful person who has found her heart by listening to it. She can truly help the blackest of souls belive in change for the better and this book is her most colorful way to prove it. The book is a bit startling in color, which makes it not a great gift idea for my male counterparts...but they will just have to deal with it. Its a wonderful book and really acknowledges the challenge in self-truth and helps you to be able to ride it out and break the addictions that this unhealthy world can offer. I would recommend this book to people who are into self-help and also those who appreciate the metaphysical realm of thinking! Louise is Great!!!
