Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreS?In this rhyming board book, Marzollo uses simple verses and a question-and-answer format to introduce concepts. "Do you know new?/Oh my, I do./Brand-new, I do" is illustrated with a painting of a newborn baby, while "Do you know blue?/Why, yes, I do./Blue, blue, I do" accompanies a picture of a girl reaching up toward a bright sky. Takabayashi's childlike artwork is bright and appealing. The poem concludes, "Do you know you?/Of course, I do!/Don't you?" The last page of the book has a Mylar sheet that is intended to be a mirror for readers to look into and see their own faces. Unfortunately, the reflection is very distorted and the thin film of Mylar may not hold up well to the frequently rough-and-tumble usage a library book receives.?Kathy M. From Kirkus Reviews

Do You Know New? ($5.95; Feb. 28, 1998; 14 pp.; 0-694-00870-2): In a simple poem in the Harper Growing Tree series, Marzollo (Home Sweet Home, 1997, etc.) introduces concepts for babies that have a long u sound, but while parents can point out a shoe or count to two, a concept such as ``new'' will be too abstract. A foil mirror on the last page invites children to recognize ``you,'' but the poor quality of the mirror results in a distorted and unrecognizable image. Despite these flaws, the book is fun to read aloud, and the illustrations are welcoming in their rounded simplicity and comforting pastel colors. More About the Author

Jean Marzollo was born and raised in Manchester, Connecticut.

She says, "As a child, I loved to read and sew dolls' clothes, one outfit after another. I am a graduate of Manchester High School, the University of Connecticut, and the Harvard Graduate School of Education. After working as a high school English teacher and editor of Scholastic's "Let's Find Out" kindergarten magazine with Carol Devine Carson for 20 years, I began writing children's books. I have written over 130 books, including the award-winning, best-selling I SPY series for children, written completely in rhythm and rhyme. Rhythm and rhyme are like music without the tune; they lure and excite the ear. Children love rhythm and rhyme, and so do I. Do you know that I SPY actually has the same rhythm as "Old Mother Hubbard" and also rap? I treasure the beautiful, intricate photographs by Walter Wick in the I SPY books. When I wrote the first I SPY book, I automatically thought of kindergarten children so everything that I called for was concrete, something a 5-year-old can find. The result is a hunting game that children and grownups can play together successfully. Sometimes children are better than their parents! In recent years I took up painting and have begun to illustrate my own "books on paper" and "books online." You can see them on my website: jeanmarzollo.com. Writing and illustrating picture books today is as much fun as sewing dolls' clothes was when I was in third grade. As soon as I'm done with one book, I'm happily compelled to start the next."

Jean Marzollo lives in Upstate New York.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great starter book for baby, May 9, 2000
By
This review is from: Do You Know New? (Harper growing tree) (Hardcover)
We purchased this book, along with Where is Maisy?, for our baby when she was only 4 months old and both quickly became her favorites. 5 months later she still reaches for these 2 consistently. Do You Know New holds her attention for its sing-song rhythm, colorful pictures, and she seems to really focus on the wonderfully illustrated childrens' faces. It's a great starter book for babies, even the very young.

5.0 out of 5 stars Do You Know New?, August 1, 2000

This is my baby's favorite book. We started reading this to her when she was just a few weeks old and the text has a great rhythm, which she loves. At 10 months now, she picks that book out and loves to flip through it. It's a durable book, has been with us everywhere, and is a good size and light weight that it's perfect for little hands.

The illustrations are great - not the blinding primary colors you often see in some baby books.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of our favorites!, January 5, 2002

We bought this book when our daughter was a newborn and she's always loved it! Now that she's two, she still gets a kick out of reading it! However, I recommend that you not buy this item online because there's a mirror on the last page and some copies of the book have a blurry mirror! You're better off buying it in a store to make sure that the book isn't defective!
