5.0 out of 5 stars A Gritty New Sound for James Bond that Works
Chris Cornell's performance of the main title song for CASINO ROYALE is both gritty and captivating. Absent from the Soundtrack album, this single thus far is the only way you can get this song on a CD. Initially I did not like this song at all. 2.0 out of 5 stars Great song but 13 bucks!? WTF!?
Hi gang,

OK, I'm a huge Bond fan (and not the type that says he is but doesn't know even the most basic of trivia like the fact that Pierce Brosnan's late wife played "Countess" Lisl in For Your Eyes Only). I love CR as a return to Fleming's Bond and YKMN is an outstanding title song. As has been pointed out, this is the pop rock version, not the movie...

Absent from the Soundtrack album, this single thus far is the only way you can get this song on a CD. Initially I did not like this song at all. After seeing the film I found that it really works and gives the film the edge it needs to bring in a new and more reality based style of Bond movie. The catchy melody is actually very good and the song has a raw gritty drive that works on its own. I think it is the best Bond song since a-ha's THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS.

4.0 out of 5 stars The song is a solid James Bond title song, amongst the best, January 2, 2007

This song works great as an opener to the film. Its a high octane song that sets the tone for the rough-edged story we are about to see on screen. The song is also a great song on its own, much like "Live and Let Die", "The Living Daylights" and "A View to a Kill" were on their own (too bad Alice Cooper's "The Man with the Golden Gun" was never used). The song style spectrum that the 21 Bond films cover is pretty diverse, and so Cornell's song fits right in with all of them. Why isn't it on the film's score soundtrack? Cornell was asked that by the BBC's entertainment reporter Victoria Lindrea, and he replied "The song is going to be released as a single in the UK at some point. But it's also going to be on my next album, which is out in February. It was a decision of mine not to have it on the film soundtrack. I wanted it to be mine." Film producers/studios can have some pretty rediculous contractual specifications over ownership issues, so I can't blame him for wanting to do it that way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Song - Bad Decision, Chris, April 16, 2007
This review is from: You Know My Name (Audio CD)
I was disappointed that he chose to have the song omitted from the soundtrack CD. I've never heard of that before and had really been looking forward to having the entire score rolled into one CD. So much for that. >:(

As has been pointed out, this is the pop rock version, not the movie version. In fact, there is even a difference in the lyrics: the bridge was removed for the movie and the lyric "I've seen diamonds cut through harder men" was changed to "I've seen this diamond cut through harder men" for the movie.

Noentheless, this is an excellent version of the song and makes for excellent driving music when combined with 'Shadow of the Sun' from 'Collateral' (not Bond, but excellent Chris Cornell) as well as a number of other Bond themes.

I give the song 4 stars, but why is it so expensive? I bought the single off Sony's Connect for less than a cup of coffee and no one is going to convince me that the "B-Side" song is worth the cost of an entire album. That's why I marked it at 2 stars.

Unless you really want the acoustic song, go buy the single on Sony Connect and transfer it to an audio CD. Then you can play it on virtually any CD player or re-rip it to add it to your MP3 library.

3.0 out of 5 stars Buy it on iTunes, April 16, 2007
This review is from: You Know My Name (Audio CD)
Great song, but unless you are really, really in desperate need for the acoustic version of "Black Hole Sun" buy "You Know My Name" for 99cents on iTunes. Nobody should have to pay 12.99 for 2 songs. Anyway, you could probably get the "Black Hole Sun" as an acoustic on iTunes anyway for 99cents. And if you can't just get the original for a buck, it's better anyway.
It's just disturbing to see that people paid 12.99 for this.

3.0 out of 5 stars The only place to find the one song, so..what's it worth to ya?, April 11, 2007

A friend and I saw Casino Royale at the theater, and he was extremely impressed by the 'You Know My Name', enough so that we tracked down the soundtrack that night. To his dismay, it was not there, but my research revealed that it would be available later as a single; his research revealed a dispute between Cornell and Sony regarding payment for the recording. Hence, the need to get this single from Japan. The Amazon price is acceptable for what will probably become a rarity due to the dispute, and the Bond song is EXCELLENT. The other song included is a live version of 'Black Hole Sun', of interest to Soundgarden completists, but only of some interest to me, though well done. My friend is now serving in Iraq, so it fell to me to get this for him, and I am glad I did, but I wonder why neither party in the dispute could find a middle ground given the potential earning power of this fine song? You must choose, reader, just how much you like it, to justify the cost.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't buy if you liked the movie version of the song., January 24, 2007

The version of YKMN here is the somewhat grittier, more staccato "main" version, aimed at rock radio stations. If you go for that kind of thing, then you're welcome to this.
Personally, I much prefer the "pop" version...more overproduced, more orchestrated, and even has slightly rerecorded lyrics (particularly the adlibs right before the ending). I think it has a better driving beat underlying the chorus, too. It's not HUGELY different, but it's certainly noticeable.
If you're not familiar with the difference, you can compare on Youtube; the Main version is used for Cornell's music video, while the Pop version was edited down for use in the credits of the movie (you *can* find the movie credits on Youtube).

If you prefer the Pop version, do NOT buy this single--it contains the Main version. It does not seem to be available here, but there is a different official release of the single that contains both the Pop and Main versions, released by SureTone records. Track that down instead for the Pop version. I'm rather annoyed that they couldn't put both versions on this single here.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bond theme, April 5, 2007
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: You Know My Name (Audio CD)
So many great Bond themes have been created over the years, my own favourites include Shirley Bassey's 3 and Gladys Knight, was unsure of this at first, but it has really grown on me and I actually did buy it. It certainly suits such a new and probably best Bond ever....

1.0 out of 5 stars NOT as featured in the film!, March 20, 2007
This review is from: You Know My Name (Audio CD)
This is not the theme song that plays over the opening credits for the film. It is also not the version that is played during the end credits. In short this version it is NOT "FEATURED" in the film at all. This is the rock version. Big disapointment. If you are looking for the actual theme you'll have to keep looking. Only problem is it doesn't seem to be comercially available anywhere

1.0 out of 5 stars DONT BE FOOLED!, January 12, 2007
This review is from: You Know My Name (Audio CD)
I am a HUUUUUUUUGE Bond fan since I was 5 years old and LOVE all the movies. When I first heard the "rock" version of this song a month before the movie came out it caught me off guard, but eventually grew on me to the point where I listened to it on my ipod over 700 times!!! (itunes counter) So anyway, then other versions of the song came out. The music videos version is the POP version which in my opinion is better than the ROCK version. Then when I saw Casino Royale during the title sequence, it was another version, the FILM version which was better than any other previously released version. Then a few weeks after it was announced that the single would be released. On the cover it says "AS FEATURED IN THE MOTION PICTURE CASINO ROYALE" but DONT BE FOOLED!!! IT'S THE SAME OL ROCK VERSION WE ALL HAD A MONTH BEFORE THE FILM WAS RELEASED! TOTAL SCAM!
