4.0 out of 5 stars Henry, crashing through the 80s, no regard for trends...gotta love it, September 15, 2009

If "Bermuda Blues" were written thirty years prior to this recording, it might have become a standard. The same kind of standard that people can readily identify; oh, that's "Autumn Leaves." I know that, that's "Take Five"! Hey, someone covered "Footprints" yet again, how about that?

"Bermuda Blues" is a deceptive start to this album, because the remaining tracks are the kind that remind you that musicologists can save a lot of time and effort by categorizing Henry Threadgill as a genre unto himself. Long, lanquid passages that don't come in boring blocks or rounds and formulaic solos ("Theme from Thomas Cole" is a more-than satisfying example), if you are reading this review you already know Threadgill and you know the [number] drill. I have yet to find a bad album by the guy.

This is not my tip-top favorite, but it could a favorite for you and lots of others. Thus it is worth seeking out. It unfortunately remains out of print and someone really needs to start cracking the whip on reissuing Henry Threadgill releases. Seriously, how many editions of "Kind of Blue" does the current market need?

4.0 out of 5 stars Numero Uno !, March 31, 2009
This review is from: You Know the Number (Audio CD)
Another excellent disc from the Threadgill Sextett, a "little big band" adds nice rich texture 3 horns sax, trombone, trumpet and the a big propulsive rhythm section bass, cello, 2 drummers really cook all the way through "Bermuda Blues" is the single most cachiest track Ive heard by the composer, "YKNTN" one of 3 strong albums came out on RCA, some of his best work of the 1980s. These major label goons when will they wake up ? still NO CD reissue ?? whats going on, put this on CD now !
