Book Description

November 1, 2009
A book editor is forcibly taken by her abusive husband to a remote mountain cottage during a heavy snowstorm.
Caught by her husband after an escape attempt, she is shoved down the basement steps, shot at, and left to die in the eerie darkness. Sadly, a romantic but muscular detective, hot on their trail, is also wounded and locked in an automobile trunk in subfreezing weather.
Can a ghostlike creature, secretly watching during the blizzard, save the two lovers or is it just a mere phantasm of their frenzied minds?

More About the Author

Regis Schilken was an educator in the Pittsburgh Public School System for 30 years before retiring. He remains obsessed by that mysterious realm where philosophy and science overlap. His stories reflect his search for meaning in a very human but often terrifying way.

Three of his books have been published: THE OCULI INCIDENT and THE ISLAND OFF STONY POINT, and a third book, YOU KNOW WHEN, was just recently released. Rege has signed a contract for DEMONS OF JUSTICE to be published in 2010. Hopefully, THE TEE-MAY CODE will soon follow. At present, he is working on KILLMARNOCK.

In addition, Regis writes a series of articles for Blogcritics Magazine under the title of SCIENCE AND BEING. He produces book reviews which appear regularly on that same Blogcritics website, on Midwest Reviews, and on The Internet Review of Books.

At the present, he lives with his wife, Jennie, in Bethel Park, a borough just outside of Pittsburgh. They have three children and three wonderful grandchildren.

Regis hopes to keep writing until he forgets what the keyboard on his computer is for.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mystery with a twist of smart, December 22, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: You Know When (Paperback)
You Know When gave me the three things I love best in a Regis Schilken book--interesting characters, wonderful plot twists and genuine knowledge about how the human psyche works!

Schilken has a gift for giving depth to an exciting book. In this one, the very serious issues of battered spouses and dissociative disorder don't slow the plot down. Rather they create a unique background upon which an intricately carved and intriguing mystery comes to life.

Schilken's approach to page turners is rare and very human. I finish each book--and I finish them fast because I can't help but read one more chapter--feeling that here is someone who loves and understands the complex world we live in. And then I feel sad because it's over too soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars A read well worth considering, March 10, 2010
This review is from: You Know When (Paperback)
When it looks like all is lost, there is always still a glimmer of hope. "You Know When" tells the story of two lovers, apart and on the brink of death. With death seemingly like an inevitability, hope takes a spiritual form as someone may save them just yet, or it just may be something that their near death minds are imagining. Psychological and enticing, "You Know When" is a read well worth considering.

5.0 out of 5 stars important & fun, February 12, 2010
This review is from: You Know When (Paperback)
Schilken has done it again. He's made me forget time and place to spend a snowy evening with his story of heroes and their batterers who meet justice at the hands of a criminal. What a twist! What a wonderful way to forget that the gusting snow outside my window is not the snow and wind that will nearly freeze Paul, our hero, to death.
Paul's love, a woman married to someone bent on her destruction, is, like so many others, the victim of a partner whose mind is sickened by the roll of genetic dice or the alcohol and chemical substances so often used by already tortured minds. This is a story that reminds us how easily a sick mind can blend into and damage the lives of seemingly ordinary people. It is a story that entertains while it reminds us how tenuous our hold on sanity and reality really is.
Schilken reminds us that victims are not people who wear a sign that says, "hurt me" on their foreheads. They are the helpless or unfortunate who have been ensnared by the caustic needs of others, often loved ones, that seem bigger and stronger than they are. This is a story of helpless resignation that morphed into strength and resistance. This is a story of love and the story of one woman with the courage to face her tormentor and another woman with the pathology to cross a line none of us want to cross.
