Mystery with a twist of smart,

This review is from: You Know When (Paperback)
You Know When gave me the three things I love best in a Regis Schilken book--interesting characters, wonderful plot twists and genuine knowledge about how the human psyche works!
Schilken has a gift for giving depth to an exciting book. In this one, the very serious issues of battered spouses and dissociative disorder don't slow the plot down. Rather they create a unique background upon which an intricately carved and intriguing mystery comes to life. Schilken's approach to page turners is rare and very human. I finish each book--and I finish them fast because I can't help but read one more chapter--feeling that here is someone who loves and understands the complex world we live in. And then I feel sad because it's over too soon.

A read well worth considering,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: You Know When (Paperback)
When it looks like all is lost, there is always still a glimmer of hope. "You Know When" tells the story of two lovers, apart and on the brink of death. With death seemingly like an inevitability, hope takes a spiritual form as someone may save them just yet, or it just may be something that their near death minds are imagining. Psychological and enticing, "You Know When" is a read well worth considering.

Schilken has done it again. He's made me forget time and place to spend a snowy evening with his story of heroes and their batterers who meet justice at the hands of a criminal. What a twist! What a wonderful way to forget that the gusting snow outside my window is not the snow and wind that will nearly freeze Paul, our hero, to death.
Paul's love, a woman married to someone bent on her destruction, is, like so many others, the victim of a partner whose mind is sickened by the roll of genetic dice or the alcohol and chemical substances so often used by already tortured minds. This is a story that reminds us how easily a sick mind can blend into and damage the lives of seemingly ordinary people. It is a story that entertains while it reminds us how tenuous our hold on sanity and reality really is. Schilken reminds us that victims are not people who wear a sign that says, "hurt me" on their foreheads. They are the helpless or unfortunate who have been ensnared by the caustic needs of others, often loved ones, that seem bigger and stronger than they are. This is a story of helpless resignation that morphed into strength and resistance. This is a story of love and the story of one woman with the courage to face her tormentor and another woman with the pathology to cross a line none of us want to cross. Intriguing tale of suspense,
By Marnie Lynn (Pittsburgh, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: You Know When (Paperback)
As I read You Know When, I found myself fascinated by the way Rege Schilken developed the relationships between his characters. On one hand, he describes people who care for and are devoted to each other. On the other hand, he shows people who once pledged to love someone forever only to twist their love into something sour and evil. In his characters, Schilken exposes a kind of rawness that exists in intimate human relationships as he weaves together passion, love, tenderness, hatred and deceit.
The mysterious turns of You Know When keep building and building until the book's surprising ending. Schilken's style creates an intriguing tale of suspense.

Smooth and Intricate,
By Jake (Pennsylvania) - See all my reviews
This review is from: You Know When (Paperback)
A psychic tale of second hand vengence and retribution that many readers will find fascinating. The plot is woven smoothly and intricately and the suspense is maintained to the point where the book is a cover-to-cover must read at one sitting. The characters were developed in a way which enabled the reader to sympathize with their situations and human dilemmas.
Readers of author Rege Schilken will certainly enjoy his latest effort "You Know When", a suspenseful yarn with a unique twist.

Intriguing Suspense,

It felt like all the pieces were there. It seemed like I should know how to put them together. But there was just something missing that I still couldn't figure out. There was something I couldn't quite put my finger on. Something just out of reach that kept me saying "just one more chapter" or "just one more scene" and delayed my evening retire more than once.
I found You Know When to be an intriguing story with fascinating scenes and a well thought plot! I enjoyed the suspense provided by the author and I loved the fact that I didn't get the final missing piece until the very end. The wait was worth it as was the revealed mystery! |
