Editorial Reviews

From the Author

Since I wrote the first If You Lived book, I've been fascinated by the little-known stuff of daily living that makes up the rich fabric of the times I write about. If You Lived 100 Days Ago exposes the vast differences in how the rich and the poor lived. Though it is set in New York City, the life I depict could be in any big city at the turn of the century.

From the Inside Flap

A different time...A different place...What if you were there? If you lived 100 years ago --what kind of clothes would you wear? --what would you do for fun? --what would your school be like? --would you have a refrigerator or television?

Life in the United States was very different in the year 1900. Find out what it was like to grow up in New York, then the largest city in the country.

Ann McGovern has also written these books in the If You Lived...series: If You Lived in Colonial Times...,If You Grew Up with Abraham Lincoln...,If You Sailed on the Mayflower in 1620...,If You Lived with the Sioux Indians.

This book was very informative and helps the young reader to know what it would have been like to live in New York City at the turn of the last century. It touched on the rich and the poor, where they lived, where they worked, how they spent their leisure time, what life was like for the children, what they wore, what they ate, etc. It conveyed a lot of information in an easy, etertaining style. The illustrations are lovely. My kids all enjoyed it, from my second grader to my high schoolers, although the intended audience is probably about kindergarten through sixth grade.

My granddaughter loves to read. After she and her older brother were asking questions about "The Olden Days",
(which, by the way, he thought might be sometime around 1980) I thought this might satisfy their curiosity.
It gives a fairly good idea of life 100 years ago but I think it does not go far enough in giving a clear picture of how much harder times were back then - not only for adults but for children who often went to work at extremely young ages.

Before reading to your children, I recommend that you sit down with your children and explain that rich people are not mean like they are portrayed to be in this book. I'm not rich, but I don't despise people that have more money than me, and I recognize the good things they do. It does a lot of comparison of what it was like to be rich and poor in that era, but there is definitely a negative connotation (really more like hate) towards the rich. Since we already purchased it, we simply read it and omitted the more hateful comments. I recommend finding another book.

I bought this book thinking that it was a book about how life would be 100 years ago for kids but it was all about the poor and wealthy adults in New York City. I guess I was looking for more of middle class or farm life... I was really disappointed.

It should be read to children a little at a time. More interesting for inquisitive older children and adults,

I bought it for my 9-year-old granddaughter after I visited the tenements in New York. She is a good reader, but I thought the pictures were so good that they would help her understand the subject better. She liked the book, and said her teacher has a lot of others by the same author. I think it makes the reader understand and feel like he is actually there, in words that a kid can understand and experiences they can relate to.
